Just read in the service manual the diesel fuel filter needs emptying of condensation at 4.5k, which is what I'm now at, so does anyone know what is involved? Is it a DIY or dealer job?

Cheers, James

I read that in the manual as well. It's well hidden and no mention of it by the dealers.

Jeez really, i know diesel is full of lumpy crap what clogs up the filter. But i didn't realise you could clean out the filter..... :) Used to replace the Escorts fuel filter during a routine service.... and that was 6000 miles. :I In fact i felt like a bit of a gimp when i found out what i thought was the oil filter was actually the fuel filter.... it was massive! Bigger than the oil filter on a petrol car. :I

Looks like a hidden cost to me! [V]

So have you not bothered with yours Les?

Cost is what I was fearing Stiloboy, even a two minute job they're likely to charge an hours labour for:(

I've only 3k up. I have some minor niggles need sorted so I will mention it the next time I'm at the dealers. Although I'm 99% sure I don't pay for services anyhoo. :D
Sorry. :p

I'm a bit suprised you've not heard any info yet, seeing how many Diesel owners there are on here, unless they've all done less than 4.5k miles.... :(

James it´s not dificult, you can do it yourself, you just have to purge the Diesel filter.

For that you have to losen a purge at the botom of the filter and let some diesel/condensation come out.

They do the same in service when they swap the filter to fill it up with diesel, to purge the air out of the circuit.

Hope this answer helps.

PS:Stiloboy, the ESCORT had a very old diesel engine (now i understand some of your previous posts) that could support any kind of diesel you puted in the tank, as for the high performance diesel engines we got today, the fuel has to be well refined and free of impurities that´s why i only use BP Diesel extra on mine. More expensive but extra protection:).
It isn´t all about economy you know....

Cheers Vitsov, can you tell me roughly where abouts I will find it? gonna have a go myself;)

Lovely Sprint Blue Stilo - And no money to mod it!

Hi James,

The filter is located in the right side in the engine bay.
It´s grey and has "filtri carburanti" on it, if it is the original one, is brand is UFI.

JamesM, know how i said it would be a while 'till i bought a diesel car again, and by then it would be 200 or so bhp from 1.9....

Well...... Vauxhall new 3 door 212bhp from a twin turbo 1.9.

SOoooooooo..... maybe in 3 years if its got proven reliability....

Buuuut..... it IS a Vauxhall...... and i hate em!

Vitsov, I had a go at doing it, found the plug ok and began unscrewing it, but it wouldn't unscrew all the way as it has a cable attached (couldn't find a relaese to unplug it), but some diesel/water did come out of the small nozzle, but only a small amount, how much should come out?

Does it sound like I've done it?

The dealer wanted £16 for this, which I didn't think was too bad, but I'd rather do it myself for free!

Hi james,
I think it was enough:D, you only need to purge a small amount of the contents of the filter to do it.

The diesel floats so at the botom of the filter is where you find the condensation.

Oh, and Fiat and vauxhall(opel)aren´t sharing engines, opel is learning from FIAT engines and using them;)
