General Daytime Running Lights

I think a facelifted fiat would have more agressive lights, maybe some audi style led's. The interior would be more modern with digital screens and more electro stuff. Thats about it id say, i dont see them changing much with the car. Oh, a better auto gearbox please! And i guess the new 105 hp twinair to replace the 1.4

Oh please God no!! I hate those led's
The new model Citroen C1 has them, They look ****e imo.

Fantastic news :) Say goodbye to dingleberries driving with only pissy sidelights at dusk (as the law allows but common sense should dictate that you shouldn't)

They should just have only an on setting for the lights front and rear. Whats the point with the DRLS if they dont turn on the rear lights and you are following someone driving much slower in near dark weather especially a grey car which you cant see!

Several times i was on the road and people told me to turn off my dipped beams as they shouldnt be on in daytime = )

Because unless its dark during te day, even in poor visibility tail lights don't make much of a difference to visibility.

As for your latter comment, I've had that once or twice and pilotless told said people to 'post offce' - or even better 'I'm glad you've seen them working' :)

Just as an aside, New Panda (and any other NEW car built from start of the year onwards - ie. a new model, not a continuation of an existing car a la Punto 2012), can have no option to turn off the DRLs.

I would imagine 500L and 500 when it gets a facelift will be the same, no option to turn off.

Interesting. Where have you seen this update out of interest? Your not getting confused with the origional legislation which states that all new models requiring type approval from Feb 2011 require DRLs to be fitted are you?

Two cars on a road, one doing 30 and another doing 50. Closing speed head on? 80mph. Closing speed if the car doing 50mph is behind the one doing 30? 20mph. So you've got 4 times the time to see the car you're coming up behind as opposed to the car in front.

Completely out of context or am I being the retard

Too true, I can't think of any situation where driving with sidelights would be a benefit. If you need lights to be seen or see, then sidelights are pretty useless. It's a outdated law if you ask me.

Quote from report by AA

"Those in favour of daytime running lights claimed they significantly reduce road deaths and serious injuries, while those against objected to the constant glare of headlights and voiced concern that motorcycle riders may become less conspicuous. There was some concern about increased fuel costs too.

In 2006 the European Commission published the results of research into the effectiveness, costs and benefits of introducing Daytime Running Lights (DRL).

A European Commission study in 2006 suggested that a substantial number of casualties could be prevented across the EU with a positive benefit-to-cost ratio when the costs of fitting lamps and the environmental cost of running them was taken into account.

A later UK Department for Transport (DfT) study confirmed the Commission's findings that there would be a net reduction in accidents, but cast doubts about whether the benefit would outweigh the costs.

The UK study also concluded that dedicated Daytime Running Lights could improve the visibility of cars in dim light without reducing the conspicuity of motorcyclists."

I'm still not convinced.

If you can't see something the size of a car... in broad daylight.... unless it's lit up like a Christmas tree then you either need to slow down a bit, pay more attention before pulling out or... frankly... go visit Spec-Savers.

Ralf S.

You might well be right - but that's just the point - how do you know the driver about to pull out of a side road doesn't need to visit Spec-Savers?

Wow great to see this old chestnut spring back into life. Since I saw this post when I first joined, I've been keeping a look out for cars with sidelights and cars with DRLs.

For me, cars with DRL's are an order of magnitude easier to see that cars with sidelights. Sidelights being so small and weak that they're hardly worth having on.

I'm not saying that I can't see cars without lights, but I'm commenting about how much more noticeable cars are with them regardless of time of day, driving conditions or visibility limits. Mine are on.
