Technical dash warning lights

ON my 2000/2001 1.6 16v bravo an orange light has came on its sort of square with like 3 smaller shapes coming off it, its situated in the bottom left hand corner of the dash and i think its the top one of the group?

I know thats a terrible description but anyone know what it means?

I will try and draw a picture of it later.

Looks as if its the Engine Control System Failure light- I have the same Erratic problem- 2001 1.6cc 44k miles-. Fiat manual tells me to go to Dealership(Pretty useless where I live ) a. s.a.p.
I wonder if it could be the Lambda thing.

the engine management light, it means a fault is currently occuring that the ecu has picked up. this will mean the fault code(s) will be stored in the ecu, so a diagnostic should be able to tell you where the fault is.

oh balls this sounds costly. It came on directly after i had the cambelt done and currently my starter motor is on the way out could either of these have anything to do with it?

is it serious?

aha! you have been withholding important information!

if you get a timing belt changed and then the warning light comes on, that tells you there is a very good chance the two are related. its possible a sensor or its wiring has been disturbed during the belt change, or maybe one or both cams are not correctly timed. either could cause the warning light to come on. go back to where ever fitted the belt and tell them to check it out (something you should have done as soon as this happened).

starter motor is unrelated.

a diagnostic is £65 pounds at dealer, fingers crossed the garage that fitted the timing belt will be able to diagnose the problem for you free of charge, they definately would be if this happened to me, i'd make sure of it.

Does the car drive differently. Also if it came on after your cambelt change then i'd take it back and ask the garage to fix it.

its just gone off on its own now and car seems to be running better but they might just be a mental thing. could it be taking time for the new cambelt to set in correctly?

timing belts dont bed in, it should be perfect once fitted correctly.

if the light has gone off it means the fault is no longer occuring, which suggests you have an intermittent fault, which is usually a dodgy sensor (often just a rusty/dirty/loose connector).

if you get lucky it wont come back (such as when the cause was just a bit of damp that has dried out now), but usually it will come back. you probably arent imagining the change in performance, a fault will usually make the ecu use a default parameter as a substitute for the faulty sensor, meaning the at least one of the values used for fueling or ignition will not be the exact value that should be used. its designed to get you home when a fault occurs (well to a dealer actually). fuel economy usually suffers as well.

its bloody came back on, i was going down the motorway about 70 had like a small miss-fire then came ob but has been driving fine since but the light is still on?

any ideas?

a diagnostic should be able to tell you where the fault is.

thats the best you can do, unless you fancy diagnosing each sensor manually.

yes, the fault codes are stored in the ecu until they are manually cleared.
