Hi all, my 1.6 petrol Multipla suddenly developed a terrible crunch when turning the steering while in motion today. I thought it might have been a c.v that had hopped out of its home but the garage thinks it might be the transmission.

Has anyone else had this happen?

The car has about 150000K on the clock. I am just a little worried about replacing the transmission as the garage is not a fiat specialist (had to go to the nearest garage after it happened) Also would be good to know if the gearbox was at all likely to be repairable.

All thoughts greatfully appreciated!
Oh and the car pulls to one side and has nasty uneven feedback on the steering since the incident.

The symptoms sound the same as I had with a Citroen BX - they were caused by a cv joint disintegrating (with no prior warning!).

Hope that's all it is!

Hello There

Hate to be harbinger of doom but its not your cv. Your gerabox has died....how do I know that? Simple. My Multipla has been in the garage for 2 months after the EXACT same thing and the cost is just too much to think about. Cheapest quote (just for the box....2nd hand) £450 plus VAT. With fitting it will be £700.

Your symptoms are exact...I too thought CV but, alas....not even close.

I am sorry to bring you gloom and doom. Good luck because I am having none. Considering scrapping the car its that bad. :bang:

My gearbox died after a small seal had gone leaving all the oil everywhere which in turn killed all the bearings in the box.
Now mine is a jtd but could be related it sounds the same problem but i took the box out myself and took it to the local gearbox guy and he charged me £90 to replace all the bearings in the box then everything was fine.
