Hello there,

I wanted to share a few ideas I had for modifiying my Punto S, apolgees in advance as I want to be as specific as possible.

I have a pair of clear indicators on standby but first:

1. Bumpers, I'm awaiting the delivery of a new back bumper to be resprayed and already have a front bumper also to be resprayed. Now the front came from an SX complete with Foglights. I always thought the Punto looked good with the lights intact (I say intact as I believe it is rather uncivlised and illegal to have them on during the day) and originally planned to wire them up to my car as the gaps would look cheap. Despite aqquiring the leads for the lights and the upper vents with the right switching and rear plug with wires (all of which took 2 hours at scrapyard) and judging the cost of installing (DIY too risky for a rookie like me, garage too expensive) I gave it up, all this for a pair of lights that will not be switched on for months on end wasn't worth it, the lights weren't fixed in properly anyway. Apparnetly someone decided to fix them in with glue and pop rivits (sp?) after they came out. Took a dremel style tool to cut out the mounts as the bolts and nuts had rusted stuck.

I thought filling them up with plastic from the old bumpers wouldn't be worth the effort either as it would be just as bad as leaving the holes in place.

So the idea I came up with was inspired by a sig by the user CinquePunto.

Notice the car' bumper has no grill, it's a photoshop effort but I thought I could use the same technique on the bumper I have.

Basically. I cut away the platic grill leaving a gap. The bumper is resprayed with primer and paint, I take some metal mesh grill from a shop, spray it black and cut it to fit where the grill and lamps would be.

That's the end of part one.

2. A simple one...in Theory.

I'd like to fit a new steering wheel from a wrecked sporting in a local scrappie. It comes with an airbag, now I understand one must undo such a wheel by using allen keys at the back but as for fitting it to my car I feel that I should lose the airbag as it wouldn't be compatable. The wheel is not really necessary but I wanted your opinion.

Most of you may have seen an S before but, I'll post a picture of my car to to give you some idea before I begin.

Maybe those wheels need replacing with sporting wheels too.

Personally I'd give up on the idea of the sporting steering wheel...sounds like too much effort :p

Keep the wheels...but lower the suspension.

Have a search for a set of side skirts off a GT/sporting...they should fit easily enough as I believe all the mounting holes are in place.

Stick on the clear indicators...and get a set off clear side repeaters from ebay for about £10

As for the fog lights...I'd imgne that most of the wiring would already be there. I'd guess that the s and SX probably have the same wiring looms as making 2 separate looms for different trim levels seems a bit pointless. You might just need to plug the lights in and swap the heater vent bit.

Hope that gives you a couple more ideas :)

In answer to the questions...

The steering wheel will fit fine - just one big bolt holds the wheel to the splines (the airbag can be re-fitted without the airbag connected up) Mine has a GT3 steering wheel - same as the 16v sporting but leather.

I fitted the fogs to mine but I had the same problem with the switches not working, so used a separate switch mounted on the dash amd wired up my own loom for them using a switching relay

Ok, I'll aquire that wheel before someone else does (y) .

I'm going to stick with my original plan with the bumper mesh, foglights weren't really necessary anyway.

what do you mean by photoshop effort?

I believe you mentioned on a separate thread that the front was a photoshop effort?

I agree with Crabbo, streeing wheel sounds like alot of hassle stick to one thing body work first.. (y) Get those clear indicators on as he said as it will look alot smarter, i would get smokey side reapeaters will go with the side door strips, dark tinted rear windows, tinted rear lights (lexus ect look cheap & nasty) get the boot de-badge & the front bonnet update it with the MK2 one, then i would get the car lowerd depending on how much your gotta replace shocks for better ones as your standerd ones wont last long, keep the alloys the now they look ok as crabbo said aswell GT side skirts maybe a spoiler as well eh why not.. :D are you leaving the car white? if so get the door handles & mirrors colour coded also the back of the boot.. (y)

Wish I had listened about the wheel, I've aquired it but somehow It doesn't seem worth the effort. I'll sell it on ebay, as the scrappie will not give cash refunds  .

How much should the suspension be lowered though? I don't want to damage the guards.

Suspension can be dropped upto 60mm with most kits. I have seen Novitec springs with a 90mm drop...but I'd hate to try that on most shocks and on most roads :p
Most lowering kits are in the following flavours... -35mm, -40mm, -45mm, -60mm...and a couple that are F45R40.
Even the shocks and springs from a GT/sporting would be slightly lowered than our standard ones.

I bought a Gt Steering Wheel - Big difference from the 60s, Sporting Steering wheel. Leather, Ive sprayed the Grey plastic bits Black - Looks fantastic and polished up the black leather. I'd fit it but the guy I bought it from lost the bloddy screws to fit the steering wheel to the airbag section. :bang: Now I have to contact fiat to find the screws :bang:

I would go with 40mm or 45mm all around, 35mm would get boring and wouldint look lowish enough for your liking,50mm people have it but you would need to replace standard shocks, 60mm sounds way to low and it does put strain on loads of other parts.. (y)

Sorry to butt in but how much u reckon would be the maximum for lowering on 16" rims ??

mk1 60s

So that's what a side skirt on a GT looks like? Not bad, I just hope the sporting in the scrapyard is still intact next time I go back so i can aquire them. There's a fresh model that has been added to the collection, the interior is imauculate, in fact the condition of the car altogether is so good I can't understand why it was take of the road.

That spoiler, is it a standard fiat part? I couldn't imagine it being an aftermarket part as it actually gels withthe rest of the car. The brakelight may be trouble though, what with the wiring and all.
