Load squelling noise while driving this morning temp gauge dropped to C and the Engine Control System Light come on, pulled over, turned out to be the cooling fan snapped of the motor.
Drove home, but is it ok to use the car until I get a chance to change the fan and how do I turn the warning light off?

I'd not use it. It's just too risky. Takes -- maybe -- 2 minutes stuck in traffic for the car to overheat and the head gasket to go (etc.).

ECU light might indicate damage already, but, replace the fan, disconnect the battery negative for a few minutes, see if light is still on.

If it is, code read ASAP.

why on earth was the engine fan on anyway?
its that cool outside - Im surprised you even need it

Anyway
the fan coming on means the engine is getting hot
So if thats failed as fingers has said above - there is a problem

the other thing you said is the EML came on and temperature guage came on - a sure sign that the coolant sensor has failed

Ziggy

Ziggy, the temp gauge was working ok until the squealling started it just dropped from it's normal temp position to cold.
The engine temp has never got above half way on the gauge so I dont think it's overheating.
Took the car out this afternoon the engine light has gone out and the temp gauge seems ok.
I agree that the fan should not cut in due to the cold but I've no idea what it could be so any help as always is much appreciated.
Visit to scrappy on weekend get fan see what happens then.

Nigel.
