Technical Compression Test

Hi all. Going to take my Cinq for a compression test. Can you please tell me the correct readings or result of this test?

Each cylinder should have the same reading?

each cylinder should have a similar reading. pretty obvious when problems. You should also do a wet and a dry test to test to identifty further problems. Are you getting test done for free as the guage is only about £15 and very very easy to use.

I am going to take it to a mechanic who works at Fiat. I am going to get charge.

What is dry and wet so that I will tell him. You cannot give me an approximation of the readings?

If they are close to each other it means that the engine is fine?

Dry is no oil added to the plug hole and wet is 1 tsp of oil added to the spark hole before testing. If the compression increases dramatically when oil is added then it means that there is a gap somewhere such as around the piston that the oil has momentarily sealed it. Sure somebody will give you a better description than i can. You do know that fiat will rape you dont you..... Just do it yourself! There is no set figure for what the reading will be but id guess at around 13-15 is across all 4 readings. When i had a hole in my head gasket, believe it or not 2 cylinders were a reading of 0 and the car still drove.

This guy told me that you have no water compression and even engine compression which means HG needs to be replaced and the head needs skimming.

Is this info correct?

they all sound wrong, all far far far too low. does the engine even run? Is the timing right? Something sounds very wrong with it.

1bar is only 14.7psi, I'd expect close to 10times that.

Yes last time I used my gauge it gave

140 PSI and 120 PSI a twin engine, stripped without a wet test

The 120 PSI cylinder had too large a compression rig gap, replaced rings both 140.

But even if the gauge is badly calibrated the two outers should not be much different from inners, I'd not go back to that mechanic though.

compression tests are pretty crap at anything other then looking for the obvious (head gasket)
A leak down test is more reliable

Sounds like he is looking for work under false pretenses.

Buy a compression tester and do it yourself.

Hi all again. I have changed the HG and skimmed the head in summer. Now the same thing is happening buy overheating and burning oil. Did the compression test myself and the same readings come out. I bought a new one. Very cheap to buy. The rings where not replaced as I have to take the whole engine out.

I think the best thing to do is replace the engine and buy a Punto 60 engine. Does anyone know a contact or seller of who sells engine of the Punto 60 in Sicily as I can go for it. Will not buy it the UK as the postage is too expensive to Malta.
