Hello from NZ,

I have a 2018 Fiat with the comfortmatic gearbox and the query is (some say yes some say no), if I stop at say roadworks (or other delay) for a shortwhile (say 3-5 minutes) and I put gearbox into neutral, is the clutch closed (like in a true manual gearbox) and no load on thrust bearing.

I have always done this, but everbody seems to have a different answer ( even Fiat dealer said closed as long as hand brake is on, others say closed as long as foot is on brake). Fiat dealer also said to leave in gear when stopping "to avoid damaging gearbox" (he couldnt explain what would be damaged). I have always left in gear when turning engine off as the handbrake leaves much to be desired.

Any replies much appreciated.

Regardless of whether a gear is selected (1st or R) or Neutral is selected, if the engine is running and the vehicle is stationary, then the clutch is operated (open) and full thrust and stress is applied to the slave thrust bearing and the associated hydraulics (Master cylinder/slave cylinder, clutch operating solenoid EV0, etc) as well as the diaphragm fingers.

See this video, it Applies to the fiat dualogic system, i think that is similar to the conformatic

I have confirmed it by reading the parameter of the system with an obd and the multiecuscan software. If hace a fiat500 automatized.

With the car stopped and the gear in N, 1, R, the clutch is opened (like clutch pedal pressed). in N, the clutch if Fully open (clutch pedal fully pressed). In the 1 or R the clutch is opened but not fully (the pedal would be a little released). Is like id the car would be ready to start loving. The system suffer less if it is on R or 1.
