i have some diagnostic software on my laptop that connects via a serial port.
the hardware came with a usb to serial adapter.
i have installed the driver for it but device manager says its now com18. but my diag software will only let me select com ports from 1 to 8 :bang:

how do i fix that delete and re install driver and hope it get assigned a different port number?

thanks

Hopefully what you've found will fix the issue.
I no longer have a working XP machine, but Win7 (best Windows ever in my experience) allows this:
Plug the ELM in.
Open Device Manager. Should see an option of 'Ports (COM & LPT)' Expand this to see your ELM.
Right-click your ELM, choose 'Settings', then 'Port Settings' and 'Advanced'.
The current Com port should be in a box with a drop arrow, which should give a list of ports to choose from.

that was it thanks for the help. i have no idea how i missed the advance tab before. got it all working and got into ecu to access fault codes but still none the wiser

the ones to worry about are in bold, ive bench tested motor and that seems fine, i will whip electric brake off and give it a test
