Technical Clutch makes a whining noise

Hi all,

Theres a noise I hear from my clutch from time to time. First of all, I'd like to say that this doesn't happen all the time. There is no telling when its going to do it, it just does it sometimes and not the next.

It only does it when I pull away. As I take my foot off the clutch to pull away, whilst putting my right foot on the accelerator, it starts to whine and I can feel it in the pedal itself. Once my foot is completely off the clutch, the whine and feeling goes. Occasionally it was also whine a little bit when changing to second gear too, but that is a lot less frequent.

It does seem to happen more when I pull away faster or when I'm on a hill and the car is more reliant on the clutch.

Its been a problem ever since I got the car, and now its just really bothering me. I'll pull up next to someone, trying to look cool (as if!) and then my clutch makes this horrible whine!

Anyone got any ideas? I know the clutches are never really that cheap...

Clutches are cheap -- it's the labour fitting them that's not!

My best guess is worn out release bearing.

Got any idea how much this would be to fix with labour costs?

was doing it myself for first time, not that hard rly, only takes time, buddy only helped me center the clutch and lower/lift gearbox

My guess would be release bearing as well although it doesn't really matter which bit it is. The box will have to come out sooner or later to see exactly what is going on and then if it is the clutch you will be fitting a complete clutch kit anyway.
Quality kits are about £70 and you could allow the same again to equip yourself with proper supports and jacks and tools you won't have. It can take a day or even into a second if it's your first time. A second pair of hands would be a big help as would an experienced eye.
Depending on where you ask a garage could be asking £250 or more. Start asking around now.

Around £50 (depends on the exact model). How much to fit depends very much who fits it. Garages are always more expensive than backstreet clutch jockeys, who are generally better and cheaper than high street chains. In Liverpool around 110 quid.

If it's that noisy, there's always a chance that it'll wear through the diaphragm springs, leaving you with no drive.

DIY it's more awkward than difficult, but the killer tools that the trade use is a transmission jack and a lift -- DIY folk struggle with ordinary jacks, axle stands, engine cranes and a bloody silly Haynes manual that tells you that you need to dismantle most of the suspension to do it -- you don't.

fords do it even more
its more like a whoooooooor noise though
