Hi guys,
A few months back i had my clutch cable snap on me at the pedal side of the cable.
so i replaced the cable with the correct part for my model.
Now, it's gone and snapped again, yet this time, it's the white housing that fits into the bodywork behind the clutch pedal!
The car started to get a little hard to turn over.. then five minutes down the road, it just shattered (the white fitting) and my clutch went. Pulled over to the side of the road, and when i went to turn the engine over again, i had the same problem that i had with turning it over.. this was fixed once moving the clutch arm into a different position.
Is this a frequent problem with pandas... i see a lot of posts on here regarding the clutch cable and some snapping every other month. my clutch did start to feel heavy, making the odd crunching noise now and then before it went.
i'm thinking of possibly buying one of the newer clutch cables with the metal fixture instead of the white plastic rubbish and trying to fit that as well.

any advice, info or past experience of this would be of great help.
thanks in advance

i also recommend greasing the clutch cable. loads of people say not to.. but on my panda its nice and light.

on mine, the clutch started to feel "gritty" as i pressed the pedal down.. so i bought a new cable.. when i got it i was shocked to find it had no lubrication what so ever so what i did was warm up some grease so it became runny and heated up the cable with a hair dryer then i pored the grease into the open cup type thing on the pedal side of the cable and let it run all the way through till it started to drip out of the bottom.

my clutch feels no way gooey.. it feels just brilliant.

ive been told that a clutch cable snapping can be a sign of a clutch on its way out.. but i just think it's lack of lubrication.

dont forget to oil the clutch arm as it goes into the bell housing. as i know clutches can get stiff on that top bush.

My introduction to Fiat Panda's was in fitting new clutch cables for my brother in law's Mk.1 every 4-6 weeks.

After one hacksawed its way through the plastic part and part of the bulkhead (he said it had got stiff!), I fitted one of the later ones with the metal guide tube. He never asked me again, so I presume it worked...

I have been here as well. I have to admit I never fitted the metal type...will look out for this as didn't realise this existed...someone has probably mentioned it before. I went through a few though and then bought a cable which seemed more flexible than the rest. this didn't snap as it was able to make the 90° turn without sawing through the plastic thing. So I put it down to some dodgy rip off cables which had been replaced with too thick cable.

Anyway, I know mine is getting dodgy again as well so I might look into these metal versions :D

Good luck, let us know if the problem is solved! :D

Whilst any cable will wear and break eventually, it should last a reasonable time. The wear on the cable is affected by the work it does. Premature failure can be due to a lack of lubrication, although even without any, I'd expect more than a few weeks of use. Other causes can relate to a clutch wearing out, so needing higher pressures to release, and to wear or lack of lubrication in the clutch fork pivot bushes. I've seen on here somewhere, but cannot remember for which model, several posts relating to the pivot bushes of the clutch fork, so those would be worth a look.
