Clunk when I steer through centre

Hi,

I've got a Bravo HGT, and have noticed that when I steer through the centre to the left, there a little 'clunk'. Sometimes louder than others. It appears to come from the front left of the car.

I've had it checked at the Fiat garage and they say it's the shock absorbers that need to be replaced, but going off the Haynes manual, I've got no symptoms of faults there.

The only thing that I can find reference to is the CV joint, but after joyriding around the carpark last night, there's no noise when I'm at full lock. It's only just when the steering passes through centre.

The question is, should I pay for a second opinion (I live in Switzerland now, so you pay for everything), or just go for the shocks?

Thanks for any ideas.

Chris

sounds to me like its the steering rack thats the problem. but if the garage says its shocks then pay them to replace the shocks if it stil does it when you pick it up, go back to them and say "i paid you to fix the described problem" tell them "its not fixed i want it sorted at the price we agreed to fix the problem".

Possible track rod end?

Jack it up, put it on an axle stand and try for horizontal free play at the wheel ie from 9 o clock to 3 o clock. Sometimes, if it's only worn a little, you only feel it knocking if your rest your hand on the track rod end while someone does the pushing and pulling of the wheel
