Had this fault for a while and I believe it's the torque sensor.

I lose power steering. Engine off and on fixed it, but a left turn makes it come back on.

I can see clock springs for sale, but either as one unit. Or as a complete set with wipers and indicator stalls attached.

Does anyone know which one I should be buying?

Thanks.

Clock spring has nothing to do with power steering

There is a torque sensor

You can read this with software

Graph it raise the revs to about 2.5K

Turn the steering left and right a few degrees

Until it starts to fail, see if it fails at the same degrees

If you do this does with raised revs does it go from lock to lock without failing

The one to buy is the one with the same colour connector as you original

Reseat the connection first, it fixes a fair percentage of faults

Certainly looks like the torque sensor in the video

you need to find out what colour to order

Here the instructions

I always found, it they are fine in one direction but not the other, feels funny or stops working it the torque senses, yet to have one fail on the Panda but have in other delphi systems, they seem fairly reliable as long as they don't get damp, but can wear out

Here the instructions on how to fit one

The car has done 153k so I assume it finally given up.

It's going to a garage for an mot. I'm gonna let them install it.

I have had two do 200k just under and over

Fairly rare so probably just bad luck

I believe @irc took one to pieces and it was corroded but I might be remembering wrongly

Sound like it might have been a side effect of block scuttle drains, some time in the cars life

Good memory there @koalar
Yep, probably the scuttle drain on that one.
Since then I have had another one with similar symptoms to the OP. This was on a high-mileage 1.1 Active with soon-to-be terminal sill rot so I didn't bother repairing it. I persuaded the owner that it had reached money-pit status and pointed them at a nice 10-plate Active Eco to replace it. The column is still in my "when I get round to it" pile, so it may get done if I use up the other 4 spare columns I have on the shelf (so probably not).
Although, last time I checked, torque sensors were £60+ so if they are cheaper now i may get one and fix it, just because its there.
