update.
I spend a couple of hours today removing the entire centre console, stereo, glovebox, etc. to get at the drivers side motor thingy. I managed to remove it, but broke one of the three screw fixings. No change, nothing wrong with the motor, the flap manages full travel, so the AC being not cold one side is an issue with the AC evaporator, not the heating system. Decided to have a go with a can of refridgerent I've had in the garage a while. The pressure gauge read okay, but still only cold air on passenger side. I ran the engine for 5 mins with the AC on. I was getting warm air on drivers side and nice cool air on passenger side (right hand drive car) So, anyway I sprayed in as much of the DIY AC refill as the car would take, maybe a third of a 500g can.
Bonanza, cold air both sides.
In short, my AC system is leaking as it was regassed properly only maybe 2 months ago. Oh joy. Only need AC in summer, so will keep topping up when the AC gets poor, then sell the car in autumn. I can'y be having with the expense of getting it fixed.
PS, it is impossible to remove the 3rd screw on the drivers side heater control motor as the screw faced the inside of a steel box section of the car. I could barely feel the bolt head with fingers bend in a very awkward position.
