The Mk1 6speed box has a lower top end - you top out at an actual 93 @ 6000 rpm in 6th, but the MK2 units have different ratios & final drives so 6th should push you to 111.

Wanted to get to Santa Pod a few weeks ago, but had to give it a miss having boiled the poor thing trundling 'round london. York next year is a definite though.

Ahh ok that makes sense...

Boiled it  what kindda temps it run at then?

Sits at 85 most of the time, but in the two hours it took me to get from Westminster to Uxbridge (all of 20 miles) one night, it managed to get to 120!

Wow any plans for cooling system bigger rad etc?

H/G trouble at those temps surely?

Yeah - got mayo in the filler cap

Its still a job that needs doing. When its off gonna get it ported & fit some Colombo-Barini cams.

Now that the salt's down on the road she's out of action until the spring - got surface rust on the suspension bush mounts up front & don't want it to go any further.

In terms of cooling I'm thinking of a taller, thinner oil cooler with a fan and some ducting to take the heat away from the normal rad quicker.

Jesus thats hot, it took me nearly 2 hours to get round the north circular one night from bottom of M1 to Brixton and my car never went above 90'c with no rad fan working, just by using the heater on full!

Andy

Can you take me for a spin when done :D :worship:

EDIT: Temp remind me of this :(

Yeah - had the heater on full, too. She just doen't like bimbling at all. We drove down to Morzine in the French Alps in the summer - nearly 40C ambient all the way (including the odd off-the clock excursion) without it getting above 90.

The standard cinq rad must only be 50 x 30cm & the rad on the punto is about 60 x 50 - twice the surface area. I am running an oil cooler but it's only a 10 row jobbie & not really up to the job in heindsight.

Starting to think that way. The thing is, it was ok - never budged above 90 at all even trundling along the western bypass at rush hour it was ok. Something happened & caused it to start overheating. I wonder if the stat's on the way out?

I did consider upgrading the lines, but on closer insplection found that they were well up to the task already (they're stamped as being 8 bar tested - that's 112psi!)

Andy

The fuel lines and the fuel line connectors are two different things. I am very aware that the fuel lines are rated 8bars. The Punto 16v fuel line connectors are very much different from the SPI ones. I found four connectors leaking on the 3bar set-up. I also enquired with one of our suppliers, who is a hydraulic specialist covering fuel line applications too, who confirmed that the SPI connectors are unsuitable.
I tried over the past 4 years different things to stop it using the SPI connectors but see as the only solution the MPI connectors and either the MPI sender unit or an external pump.

Hi Peter,

very long time no speak. The only place that I would have suspected issues is on the top connector on the fuel pump which on the cinq is a bit of a bodge @ 1bar. replaced the o-rings with new ones & haven't had any issues. The male connector to the fuel rail was taken straight off a punto & it's female countepart was substituted with a double jubilee clamped connection.

I know this isn't ideal & considering the number of times I've had to dis/reconnect the system I wish I'd sorted it properly. Fortunately I haven't had any isses to date but wouldn't mind getting it changed.

I've tried using external pumps b4 but never had much joy - they either produce far too little pressure (facet) or far too much (bosch in-line like we use on the Mini) & require a regulator. Ideally, as you say a punto pump with punto connectors is the way forward, but they simply don't fit the cinq tank.

Andy

You just got me thinking. What about if we make our own tank fit the Punto sender unit to it fill the tank with foam to prevent the fuel being thrown all over the places and be able to route the exhaust in a desirable way?

Sounds good, but could end up being prohibitively expensove. I was thinking about an adapter plate CNCd in aluminium to convert the mounting from the cinq's inspection-hatch type assembly to the punto's screw-down system.
