Why is it only the 1.8 that has the chip packed in jelly?

As far as I know, it's the only one with the Hitachi system, was it more prone to vibration?

All depends who made it and they don't expect people to be going at them with soldering irons

Its very rare these days to find an ECU with a removable chip AND one thats not encrypted.

hey try and look at www.evc.de, with the key modules you cant copy and eprom

Check your ECU, they changed around 98 to the Mk2 engine.
