Technical chipping is it a waste or do they work?

Agree - think of it in terms of pre UCU days where messing about with main jets, ignition timing would have very little effect unless considerable work had been done - camshaft, exhaust manifold, lightening and balancing, compression ratio, bigger/twin carbs. All physical changes.

No electronics then though. Just the engine tuners art of gas flowing TBH.
I remember huge claims by Lumenition when they bought out their first electronic ignition systems. Really the gains came from the first Bosch FI systems in conjunction with electronic ignition.

Its more than likely the remapping agents hardware that make the difference.

Some companies may use flashing hardware which uses the the same protocol as the official fiat hardware, so it can be done securely through the OBD port (over K-line or CAN)

Other hardware doesnt and uses bootmode. This is a small program embedded in the ECU's processor. It is enabled by grounding a pin and the flash can be written using a serial connection and a protocol defined by the processors manufacturer.

Theres that much different hardware on the market for remapping specialists and they all differing support for different ecus

Interesting. Can anyone advise what manufacturers or models of devices can be used without removing the ECU.

Semi-related, has anyone ever hooked a data logger up to a current Fiat car via the canbus? Did you need specific adapters? What model of logger did you use?

I cant to be honest

A petrol 1.4 / 1.4t 500 will use the Bosch ME7.9.10ECU
A petrol 1.2 will use a Magneti Marelli IAW 5SF ECU
1.3mjet a Magneti Marelli IAW 6F3 ECU.

Best having a look around. Bear in mind none of this kit is hobbyist and will typically cost anywhere between 3 and 7 grand.

Get in touch with some of the professionals such as Pendle Performance, RStuning, EvolutionChips etc, they resell the kit to agents as well as working on tuning themselves and should be able to advise.

Diagnostics I dont know but should be doable with a ELM327, by KWP2000 or maybe over CAN, or both even?

Yeah, I had no plans to buy any mapping hardware, that's just a technical curiousity on my part. I don't need to remap that often :D
