Panda (Classic) Charmanda(er) The Panda

Introduction

Name Change! Previously known as Charmania for anyone not in the know, she's had a slight rename, keeping the Char but sticking my favourite childhood Pokemon name in there, Charmander, mainly because the first time I ever encountered a Panda I was about 8 years old and Pokemon was my favourite thing in the whole world.

Some details,
1992 Fiat Panda 750 Mania
769cc FIRE engine.
Lowered 40mm.
Seicento Sporting Front Seats
Side Stripes for faster acceleration
Fiat 127 'Palio' Alloys.
Veglia Rev counter, so I can count my revs.

I washed her, wanted to take her somewhere nice for pictures but it hasn't been sunny for long enough to do that, so I'll get nicer pictures at some point....
Here she is now, Charmanda.

Sorry for the terrible lighting. Can't do much about the sun.
Right so, back from holiday, been driving Char' for the last 2 days, nothing really amiss, just a few weird things happening,

When she's cold, as in not on the temperature gauge yet, she will not idle below 1800rpm, if I push the choke in any further she cuts out and completely dies, anything below 1800 is not happening until she shows on the temp gauge, as soon as the temp gauge starts registering she'll happily sit at about 1300rpm like she used to and eventually sit at 1000rpm when shes up to about 65C.

Another odd and slightly worrying thing, only noticed it today, sitting at some traffic lights, went into neutral and engaged the clutch because I know those lights take ages to change, only with the radio off and the engine at complete idle I can hear a very faint rattling noise, as soon as I disengage the clutch from neutral again rattling stops. It's really really quiet but its definitely rattling, I'll check the gearbox oil level if I can find the level hole thingy.

Finally, brakes have started squealing at low speed, my Punto always did this and it used to annoy me so much, seems I'm doomed with squealy brakes forever :(

noisy idling that goes away when you press the clutch is usually input shaft bearing... my cinq does this but i would call more a a whirry/grinding noise than a rattle...

Should I worry about it? It's definitely not a grinding noise, its very very quiet which is why I'm still driving her, you can only just hear it over the engine idle, any other noise and its too faint to hear.

well my cinq was doing it when i sold it last february, does it a bit louder now and is hard to get into gear and the clutch is now on the way out as well. i don't think its an immediate issue myself but worth getting sorted before it becomes a big issue. I just got another gearbox to go on as thats easy to do when you got a cinq, not sure if thats such as easy with a panda or not... It is fixable but just easier in my case to drop it off and replace it, probably cheaper too.

I'm about to ask something stupid.
I was cleaning Char' so there's less to be done on Saturday in preparation for Stanford, I stretched to a little under the bonnet cleaning (when I say a little, I mean a little, I wiped the airbox and cleaned the top mounts a little...)

More to the point I cannot for the life of me fathom what this very shiny thing does?

I'm sure someone will tell me and it'll be really obvious

Hast thou not gottest a Haynes, or Porters, young sir...? ;)

Not very necessary in summer, and I believe some people run without these at all... -- the one on Pippin had perished completely... -- but I believe it circulates warm air from the manifold into the air filter box.... Can't for the life of me remember what it's actually called....

Someone with a functioning brain will be along, shortly....

Edit: See this thread.... (y)
