Watch this for location of OBD port

you need to turn ignition on but not start the engine. you should have a light on your odd lead when plugged in even with the ignition turned off, without the resistor mod there is a good chance you might struggle to get things to connect properly.

Cheers - Will it do anything bad if it turns out I need the resistor?

Ahh so I don't need to do any soldering? I thought I had to use two resistors and two capacitors! thats my only worry, i havent done soldering since i was 12!

i've managed to connect the ELM cable to the ECU. However the FES software is saying the exact same milage as the dash does (17682 miles equiv. to 28458km)
the FES also says the ECU was programmed on 03/10/2008.

Does anyone have any idea if this means that it was the ECU which was replaced and not the dash because the FES doesnt seem to want to show me the "actual" milage.

Looking at MOT history on 28/10/2008 the milage was 56,111 Miles on the odometer (DD/MM/YYYY, i am unsure what the FES says it is in for eg: MM/DD/YYYY)

Does this seem a little odd? I will post a screenshot of the screen I used to make sure I was using the right one!

Edit: The next MOT shows a milage of 4,468 Miles which would make the avg of 5k a year right... so it looks like the dash/ecu started again at 0 and the correct milage is roughly 73793.

Can anyone help/confirm?

thinking logically
bsi changed in 2008 so virgin mileage
so either head was cleansed which seems the sensible answer
or head went to zero
my monies on seeing as its 4 years ago fiat fitted components and set everything to zero

interesting thread though

Seeing as I want to get it as close to the exact milage as possible, would you say I just add whatevers there now to the last highest mileage in the MOT so it says apprx 76k miles but if anyone asks when I sell it say this is only an estimate?
What would anyone recommend?

New info...
Proxi aligned it just now (still sat in the car with the laptop!) and checked the dash again and the ECU states it was programmed on 03/10/1999 now... so exactly 9 years to the day of when it "thought" it was programmed. which would also align with the date of the car I assume.

Downside: Odometer in FES still says its driven 28k km! Anyone got any idea? I'm confused now!

What does the dash clock read now?

Dont think i really matters too much what it says in FES when you connect to engine ECU, if you just re-write the mileage to the dash to as close an estimate as possible there shouldnt be a problem at all.

Dash says 17.5k miles
FES says 28k km
(both avg )

so they work out when conversion is put into place.
What would you recommend I do - Look at MOT history for the highest milage then add that and what the dash says now together, convert to KM and input?

All done! reads 73804.

Thanks for everyones help it has been superb. Hopefully I'll start learning more and be able to help other people!

Hopefully this will help someone else who has this problem!

Sorry! Just another final question...

I am assuming I need to tell my insurance why suddenly my odometer now declares 50000 miles more than it previously did as I told them I'd do a hell of a lot less than that in a year..

Seeing as I'm young and Insurance companies look for any way to increase premiums.. should I expect a premium rise?

Just it makes me think twice about calling them as I'm already paying over the odds!

Uh I don't believe so! (no paper work states I did and I certainly didnt tell thme it'd only done 17k!) It's just if they had the audacity to look at the MOT history for last year and see 14K and then look at the dash if I was unfortunate to have a crash and that say 73k it would look suspicious?

I wouldn't worry about it too much, you can always point them to here in the event of them checking it to back up what you tell them about you increasing it yourself (y)

Thanks for that! Much appreciated..

Once again thank you all for helping!
