Hi all

1st post and im asking for big help:)

Iv had a gooood look with the search function and have found the problem with my sisters car. She has a knocking noise when depressing the clutch, not sure if it starts when its half depressed or just when fully, so im assuming the thrust bearing is fubared.

Now for the big help...

Anyone have a HOW TO on changing the clutch? or even just a quick guide on what to do?

cheers

get a haynes manual, and also consult the fiat manuals at http://babarmalik.com/ledmods.htm

if you dont have the right tools and you cant get the car raised in the air, it wont be easy, but saying that it is still possible for one man to do it with the car jacked up, dangerous and difficult, but possible :)

no idea what the engine is othe top of my head, but i expect its a 1.6 or something like that. me and me dad will do it we have jacks etc was just after a rough guide....will take a look at that link now:)

UPDATE:

Hi Guys

Didnt get chance to sort this out for her as she needed to get back home (Island of White) but befor she left she took it to a garage...possibly Kwik Fit, and they told her it was a Bearing in the gearbox? and that it was fine?? now im not convinced of this especially saying that it would be fine. What is your take on it being a bearing in the gearbox?

a noisey release bearing (aka thrust bearing, throw out bearing) will usually last for many miles before it collapses. i've had 20k out of a whining release bearing, and although the noise got pretty bad toward the end, it still drove perfectly. it is not a big problem because the clutch will not slip and will still disengage/engage correctly.

the only problem is if the bearing does collapse it can cause further damage, such as flywheel and/or gearbox damage and in rare cases it can even make the timing belt snap or slip if the crankshaft jams suddenly.

Hi Jug

She told them that she thought the Thrust bearing was knackered as that is what i sugested to her.....but the garage said that was fine:confused: and told her it was a bearing in the gearbox itself:confused:

I still believe its the thrust bearing myself but was wanting to know what this other bearing could possibly be:confused:

Edit...

its not noisey it is knocking...and you can really feel it when you put your hand on the top of the engine
