You know when you try to lock the door when its open. It locks and then unlocks itself.

My Punto has started doing this when the door is closed. I opened and slammed the door this morning and it worked OK then, but now it just wont lock.

Tried to lock with the key but it wont turn in the door lock now.

Any ideas?

As you probably know, the c/l will pop up whenever it realises a door hasn't locked properly. There a little triggers in the door locks to confirm whether the lock has locked or not. Usually I would suggest this, but since the lock isn't even working manually now, i would guess theres a mechanical fault jamming the lock. You'll need to take the door card off the door thats failing and unbolt the lock mechanism. While the lock mechanism is out, ensure the key turns in the lock freely. The lock mechanisms are unservicable as far as i know, as if i remember correctly, they can't be dissassembled, so a scrapyard door lock mechanism from a car with C/L is probably the easiest fix.

Funnily enough, its been in the bodyshop who are looking for a leak and they've had the dashboard off and all sorts. Wonder if they've taken the door cards off as well looking for the leak.

It was working fine before !!!!

Hmmm. Garage reckon they aint touched the doors at all...

Its probably coincidence then... Only way they could have caused that is due to an electrical problem they've caused as the C/L wiring runs behind the dash, but tbh I can't imagine it being an electrical fault if the lock won't lock manually, unless the lock motor is constantly forcing the lock into the unlocked position but i find that highly unlikely. To confirm, disconnect the battery and try locking and unlocking each door manually with the key.

I dont think its an electrical issue. Even the key wont turn to lock it.

When you do the remote it tries to lock, wiggles a bit, and then comes back up. So it doesnt really lock completely and then unlock I suppose.

I had a similar problem with mine. So I took off door cards and sprayed all mechanical parts with WD-40 and it cured the problem.

my drivers side door has a problem with the central locking when you unlock it the locks all keep popppin up and down could this be caused by the little trigger that you have talked about in you previous reply thank you

Same problem with my 1997 Punto, sometimes it works proberly, and sometimes I have to hold the key 10 secs. closed before it will close without popping back up.

2 times now I've noticed the doors in the morning being open, and I'm sure closed them the night before.... scary...
Will put some grease on the locking parts, and check if that helps.

Thanks for the hints.

Sorry to drag up and Old thread but this happened to my wifes Punto 03 this morning, she unlocked the doors with the key fine, car unlocked all doors, she put my Son into his Child seat and closed his door, all the doors then locked??

Got spare key and only way to get into car was open boot with spare key as the drivers and passenger door would not let key turn in lock.

Opened back door from inside and then reached from there and opened front drivers door again.

What I did notice is that the handle on the passenger side did not go down properly after opening, would this cause it???

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone got to the bottom of this issue. My 5-door Mk2 1.2 8v 2004 is now showing the same symptoms as the above problems. Whilst driving the central locking has a mind of it's own and automatically locks, can also hear the relay in the internal fuse box clicking on and off.
Also I narrowly escaped locking myself out of the car whilst the key was in the ignition - thankfully I had the spare key on me to get back in.
I have now removed the fuse for the central locking as a safety precaution- so I have to manually open and lock each door -no big deal really - I can live with OK - but if the fix is cheap and easy I will be more than happy to get it rectified.
I wonder if it's a winter issue?
Cheers

Could possibly be water or condensation in the fuse box causing it to happen, my mate had similar symptoms and he disconnected the battery and gave the fuse box a blast with a hair dryer for a while, seemed to work

Cheers Pal, will give it a shot in a wee while.

Any luck with this problem?
My locks had frozen a few days ago, took a plastic bag with warm water against the lock to make it unfrozen.
When i could turn the lock with the key with no resistance i sprayed the locks with wd40.
Since then i have had the car lock&unlock all the time, i took out the fuse to make it stop.

Really annoying problem to show up just after i took care of the car, full service, new shocks in the rear new springs in the front etc..

Either an electrical or mechanical problem is making the system think that your door is not locked, so it performs an unlock. Maybe you have contamination inside the unit due to the frost or your "fix"?

I changed my Brava front door lock units to fix a similar problem, maybe yours can be adjusted or repaired.

Im thinking electrical of some sort, since i come to the car unlock->drive away. What component could make the car try to lock at this moment?

Probably the combined lock unit, there are internal switches motors and sensors. If a sensor does not detect door locked, the system can reset / unlock. The unit connects to the door handles and buttons with rods, so they can give mechanical problems if they become disconnected or damaged.

So I suspect either there is maybe internal contamination from moisture or WD40 to give electrical problems, or a mechanical problem because of freezing or forcing the lock.

So you have to carefully check and fix, or just fit a replacement door lock unit.
