Have you overlooked the AUX power connector?

With speaker connected you should 3 beeps for no video.

I'm surprised you changed the board - personally I hate giving myself work

Maybe graphics card is duff? :chin:

but ive tried the onboard as well(with GFX installed/uninstalled)
the card doesnt have an extra power connection that i see.
just the redundant fan connector

right then.GFX card and ram work fine
did a fresh install just to see if it all worked

so the mobo/cpu is at fault
ive rebuilt it all up.no signs of any damage/shorting.
the mobo isnt touching the case bar the mounting points.

ive had the pc sitting running for about 30 minutes or so and the CPU heatsink is pretty cold.
should this feel warm to the touch by now?

would say yes
tried running it without case?

fixed it
i had told myself i wasnt stripping down the heatsink to check the CPU and would just return it
however i opened it up anyway and found the CPU wasnt fitted properly!
whoever put ti in had put the cpu in but hadnt lifted the little lever first to allow it to be locked in.
did that and built it back again and all running :D

weirdly windows booted even though i did the install on a diifferent mobo/CPU

im back

PC has been crashing when downloading larger eg500mb plus files
same transferring files from the external drive
ran disk checks etc
noticed on boot i got a "primary ide channel 80 conductor no installed" error

googled it and eventually found it was to do with 40 pin cables on the IDE
looked and saw the optical cable was 80 wire so swapped them over
the "primary ide channel 80 conductor no installed" error is now gone
tried downloading a file of 500mb plus and it was fine.
then tried to transfer from the external and it crashed
dead hard drive?

right!
getting miffed now

so after the hard drives gave no errors i downloaded mem test
fired it up and got a ram error
removed one stick,ram error
swapped over to the other ram slot, ram error
did it so ive tried all combinations in the 2 slots, all errors

ive dropped in 2 old 256mb sticks and so far they have flagged up no errors, however the are slower ram
so whats the deal here?
are we looking at duff ram giving these symptoms?
before testing the ram i even O/clocked the board to 3.06ghz and i ran fine
only when i tried to transfer the files over did it crash
(back on default settings now)

right i cleaned up the ram stick contacts and all seemed fine
however today ive had errors agian
dropped in a 1 gb stick and firted it up

memtest reports errors in the stick too!
however this was removed from my working back up pc which is running windows 7 with no problems at all

so dodgy ram or mobo issue?

right you geeks, where is all my tech support

right still trying to make this work
ram/GFX cardworks fine in the other mobo
different sockets so i cant swap CPU's over.
anyway i gave the dimm slots a scrape with a blade in the hope there was some crap in there.

as an experiment ive dropped the ram speed from 400 to 300 and something in the bios.
booted it up and went to run memtest again
this time it told me my OS wouldnt allow it to test all the ram (2x 1gb just now)
and told me to run 2 copies of mem test at the same time with 810mb per prog
this is running now with no errors so far

edit:eek:kay so the ram was running at 333,any other number between that an 400 caused problems
so i went over 400 and tried 452
then i clocked the CPU from 200 to 220 with ram at 440 and got a crash, also tried 494
dropped the cpu to 210 and ram to 472,so far stable

so whats the deal here?
