i have a cd/r/w with something on it but windows won't give the disk enough time, and just says its blank

Have you got access to the drive that burnt the data? Was it done with specific software

A slim chance. and it will have been done with windows, its more to know what's on it, always a chance i did format it but I dont see me doing that
I get that if I forget to finalise a disk, the disk appears blank in other machines. Finalising writes something in the part of the disk that all machines look at first (kinda like looking at an index)

i always thought finalising was for windows below xp
finalising does just that... you can have multiple 'sessions' with CDs for writing data at different times... some devices will read all of it and some will only read the first session regardless of if you have finalised or not and some wont read a thing until its finalised.
i usually found nero handles stuff like this quite well but i havent used it for years since MP3s have become better intergrated into life and i use a lot of ISOs nowadays
