General Car won't go over 40mph

Hey there so I have a fiat grande punto active sport 1.4 and my engine light will go on and off. While it is on my car will over rev to change gear when I accelerate. Also my car won't go over 40mph with my foot down on the pedal. It'll also start shaking a lot when I'm at 40 and I want to go faster. It's weird because the engine light comes off and on. I can't scan to see a code because my obd2 tool keeps saying linking error so. Any ideas what's going on? Is it a misfire? Dirty fuel injectors? Help would be most appreciated ☺

Have you had any work done recently? What mileage on your car?

Yeah got the timing belt and water pump changed. Also the alternator. Car had dine 65k

OK the timing belt change is a possibility. Do you know whether you have the 8valve or a 16 valve engine?

If the former there's a sensor reset sequence that needs to be followed after the timing belt is changed. Search phoenic wheel on the forum ans you'll find it

I have an 8 valve. One thing I forgot to mention is that it eats so much fuel so quickly

Is it continuous or intermittent, I mean is it running normaly when light's OFF or always bad/limited to 40mph ?

Not sure about fuel but assuming your cambelt has been fitted properly then have you tried the sequence about half way down here: https://www.fiatforum.com/grande-punto/355397-engine-management-light-flashing-over-60mph-2.html

That resets the alignment of your cam and crank sensors after a cam belt replacement

Yeah I waited for engine to get warm, revved to 5000 made it idle. Did that 3 times still coming on

You have to hold it at 5000rpm for several seconds each time. You can try that again.

Okay I'll try again soon. The thing is I keep getting a linking error on my scanner so I can't tell if I am getting a code

Phonic wheel learn needs to be done if engine light flashes constantly,and if the light is off and comes on,you need to read the codes,to point you in the right direction.

If your reader doesn't connect (Fiat's can be funny like that) you might need to invest in Multiscan and a suitable interface cable/bluetooth adaptor

The thing is it doesn't flash. It's just a constant engine light. Does fiat read the codes for free?
