Hi there,

I'm a complete newbie when it comes to cars. My 2009 Fiat Grande Punto is having starting problems. This has happened once before where the car wouldn't start at all. A friend helped me bump start it, and afterward, I took it to a mechanic. The mechanic checked it and said the battery, alternator, and everything else was fine.

However, this morning, the issue occurred again. I started the car once, turned it off, and after that, it wouldn't start at all. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Thank you for your help!

There is no voltage drop as would normally be the case.

1. Intermittently faulty starter motor (carbon brushes at the end of life?)
2. Faulty starter motor relay
3. Faulty ignition switch
4. Faulty wiring harness between all of the above
5. Faulty battery earth strap

Hi, 🙂

Firstly..,

Turn off the lights and City steering, that's all electrical power 😉

So is the engine turning when you turn the key? 🤔

Several causes for that not happening,

Try again with clutch pressed down as you turn the key..

Any better?

SEARCH for similar threads. This is the most common automotive problem (car won't start)!
Starting another thread like that should be prohibited (and punishable).
You can't be newbie when it comes to the Internet. There's no excuse for not using Google etc.

Sorry my man, don't be upset that much. I have done search beforehand as well on this forum. Nothing that describes my issue i hear no sound apart from maybe a click or two, but that's about it. Thanks for the linked video though

Okay so i have turned off the steering and the lights and tried again with the clutch down and up still the same result. Im wondering if it could be a wiring issue or something.

Does it actually have start-stop and does this work normally?

The clutch switch or its relay could be faulty, too.

Maybe check OBD2 fault codes, if there are any.

No word on the engine rotating.. 🤔

But your mention of "a click"..

That points to poor electrical flow through the starter 😉

On a general car you would say
1, flat battery
2, failing starter

On a 199 punto

It's
1, failing earth cable
2, poor earth connection

Look at the electrical guide I will link you to 😉

Ideally get some
"Jump leads" to hand 👍

There no sound such as start/stop some clicks and it goes completely silent. I don't have an obd scanner, but my friend does hopefully he will bring later in the day.

Yeah as i said after the trying to start the engine is completely quiet. It can't be the battery got it checked few weeks ago. When this happened for tue first time and the mechanic reassured me that everything seems normal. If its a poor "earth connection" how can i fix that?

How long after starting did you leave it running?
Many cars will refuse to start if switched off before warming up, often it's the O2 sensor getting unburnt fuel on it.

There are lots of videos on youtube for "Fiat no crank no start"

OP has no idea if the 500 has any similar shared parts from their GP, an Opel Corsa.. Or a NASA lunar vehicle
😉

Yes. Punto or 500, more important is the year of construction. The same year, they will share more stuff than, for example, a Bravo from 1995 and the later Bravo MK2 version.

His car might have similar problems as shown in the video, like an Earth strap gone bad, a classic with older cars (see video at 18:15 min)

If it's the same problem, it'll likely be the same solution

Thanks for this tutorial =)

Update: I had one of my friends bring and obd scanner yesterday. Scanned the car computer when it was in that state and no errors output nothing. I did thrice just to be sure and seems alright.

I'll ask again.
How long did you leave it running before switching off.
