Hi guys and girls. I’ve got a 1.2 grande punto. Its decided to start grumbling at me. When I have my foot down it’ll stop accelerating for a few seconds and then give me power and continue to keep doing it almost every time I’m driving for sustained periods. I brought it to a specialist but tbh he sniffed I don’t know much about cars and tried having me kvetch. Has anyone any ideas ? That literally as much as I know ! I had an engine management light once for about 1 second but nothing since. It’s been like this for a few weeks

What's the service history like? Has it had one recently and if so, what work was carried out?

Did the 'specialist' not offer any suggestions or advice? I wouldn't rate them if they couldn't even suggest a single thing and try a different garage! There is a lot of things that could be wrong so I would try find a good independent garage (doesn't have to be a Fiat 'specialist' necessarily) to work through causes one at a time.

The service, I genuinely haven’t got a clue. The old guy said it was done but I’ve no paperwork so possibly not done in a while ? I had someone change the sump for me, was ok until about 3/4 weeks after. Not sure if it’s related.

The specialist said he didn’t know, and was ordering parts to see what fixed it. But Willy billy, he had loads of stuff coming in from euro car parts and was just guessing. I can guess myself ! So I took the car back from
him

Yes, changing oil sump can be related. Depending on how dumb and incompetent "specialist" was.
There are 3 sensors to damage in the area: oil pressure, crank shaft, lamdba.
Check for stored errors (OBD2)! Don't let anyone just swap parts blindly.

As for purely mechanical things, first thing to check is gearbox (differential) mount. This one (YouTube).

Then suspension. Next clutch.

It's nearly impossible to say what it might be because there's plenty of possibilities. It could even be the headgasket leak or worn engine. If you're lucky, it's just the spark plugs, ht leads and ignition coil related and something to do with the wiring. Even better if it's just a leak on those two rubber breather hoses on top of the engine. Just read the fault codes first.
