Hello FF'ers!

Firstly, whoever can actually diagnose this issue correctly i will personally transfer £30 to your paypal if it fixes my car, as i would be so grateful for it(y)

Background Info:

Brought the car Dec 2013, the only problem being the car revved high intermittently on idle (1800RPM).

Car started badly hesitating on accelerating about 4 months ago (got this fixed by changing the throttle body which was given to me by the previous owner of the car as he said this would also fix the high revs).

Fitted this new Throttle Body, but the part where it lets in and out air was snapped off (Plastic part on left hand side) So my friend just put tape over it and it honestly seemed fine. Ran the car again and POWER was back!

A week later, my car has developed an awful problem, it revs very very high on idle (ranging from 1800 - 2200RPM) However this is only when it warms up.

When warm it will pulse on idle (from 1800 to 2200RPM and back and forth). This led me to think it was something to do with the Tape on the Throttle Body. However i checked it and it looked okay.

Now i have a larger issue! When warm my car will lose all power and start juddering when i accelerate, however this only usually happens after it is warm and i have accelerated hard.. but once the problem starts it will pulse idle between 600rpm and 1100rpm (and sometimes cut out). A lot of the time the speedo will go dead and the revs will all die, even though the engine is running, if this makes sense (so the engine will randomly stop and then Regain revs on its own from 0RPM back to the pulsing Idle.)

Not really any smoke coming from the car however there is some white smoke now and again but I'm not too sure if this is just because its cold.

Ive changed spark plugs, leads and coil packs not long ago.

EXTRA INFO:

Sometimes if i go to start my car (once in every 10 start ups) it will tick over but not start (and then the key symbol will display) however if i just take the key out and then go to start again once the key symbol has gone off then it will start okay.

Recently, it has taken an extra second or two to actually fire the engine up.

NO Engine Management light on the dashboard.

My engine is a 1.2 8v.

My clutch is also vibrating A LOT when driving (I think this may be the flywheel) as when it idles it intermittently will make a squeeling noise (similar to a fan belt but not as loud) and when i press my clutch it will change to a ticking noise, but if i half press the clutch all the noise will disappear.

I may sound like a bit of an idiot as I'm not a mechanic but ive tried to explain everything as well as possible!

As said earlier if anyone can actually help me fix this issue i would be that grateful that i will transfer £30 to your paypal (paypal only no bank transfers).

I just want my Punto back on the road as i refuse to scrap her!

Thanks in advance,
Jayden:D

The clutch is juddering is most likely a different fault to the current issue with idling and juddering

To me
it sounds like you have an Induction leak - Extra Air is getting into the combustion chamber which the car isn't metering so there for it doesn't know its leaking - as the Punto doesn't have a MAF (Mass air flow meter)

My advise is this
Get a can of wd40 - in yoyo sorta sized area, keeep spraying joins and bolt holes around the inlet manifold and throttle body

IF you were to spray in a patch and the rev's suddenly drop and return, you repeat a quick spray and it repeats the same - you have found the source of your air leak

Dont forget the injectors have seals that sit in the inlet manifold, for some reason one of those seal or injectors not be seated correctly, it'll be sucking extra air in

People have used alsorts like brake cleaner, propane etc, but there is a risk of a flash - and that flamable fluid/gas setting alot on fire

The other thing that has popped into my mind, is the Evaporative canister (Carbon filter / Fuel evaporater collector) That sits in the driver wing, and inputs the trapped fuel vapour in the tank to the inlet manifold. Only when i've been playing with MES (Multi ecu scan - diagnostic software alot of here use on the forum), if i activated the valve and started the car, the amount of fumes in the inlet manifold meant the rev's stayed quiet high even though you could rev it to pull it through, it'd idle high
It MIGHT be possible the valve has gotten stuck open or is leaking when it shouldnt be - causing this symptom, you can try unplugging it under the airbox, see if this makes a difference, it usually has a blue pipe going into it

--------------

Key code light remains on
This is the immboliser, its not detected the key correctly, as a result its locked the engine off from starting by removing the sprak and fuel
It allows the engine to keep on cranking, but it'll crank till the starter lets go or the battery goes flat

-------------

Juddering on take off - If the ignition system is okay its not an engine misfire
Then it'll bounce of been the cheaper option of a worn bottom engine mount
Or the expensive option of the clutch has worn badly/misaligned/release bearing is letting go

So that would require further diagnostics

Hi Ziggy,

Thanks for your quick reply!

I am going to get a can of WD40 and try that trick tonight. I will also get my clutch and flywheel replaced very soon.

I will let you know if i find anything with this method.

Thanks again,
Jayden

Since its an 8v, there solid flywheels, and im going to say this
We' on the forum rarly - have heard the flywheel was at fault unless a starter motor chewed it up
Usually the punto flywheels are solid lumps that never really fail :)
Usually its the clutchs and thats that tbh
