The cambelt was suppose to get changed at 66k on my car i bought my FIAT BRAVO 1.8 HLX for £1295 at 69k and presumed that it had been changed. As time has gone by in the last 8months the ticking over is horrible i know it could be a number of things but i feelings say cambelt....and ive just been quoted a WOCKING £140 for it to be changed.....

Thats a bargin or a STEAL

£140 is about average for a belt change. i'd always supply my own belt, making it cheaper, and ensuring you get the best (gates powergrip).

do it yourself, on this model its easy peasy. only took me a few hours and cost £23.99 for the belt.

i'm willing to bet £140 your tick over problem has nothing to do with the belt. it never does, unless you fit a new one incorrectly putting the timing out

EDIT: just read your PM and see you mean there is a noise at tick over, not a rough or erratic idle rpm, so it could be a belt, more often the auxilliary drive belt, but its hard to say without hearing the noise.

Ben, as i said on Boo mate, get the belt replaced and also get her serviced, even if it only an oil and filter change. as Jug said, id say its more than likely your aux belt or tensioner thats mmaking the noise, but for peace of mind id spend the money :) my 1.2 was the same before she got her belt changed and was unrecogniseable after it was done (y)

its always money well spent, the £140 will add about £100 value to the car, so the belt change only really costs you £40, which is a bargain for peace of mind.
