The time has come for us to replace the cambelt on our 2003 Multipla so what sort of price can we expect to pay?

Can anyone suggest somewhere in Dorset that is CHEAP and RELIABLE?

£250 sounds cheap as I've been quoted in excess of £500 by local garages!!

Anyone else had a cambelt fitted recently?

Scotty:D

I had mine done last year at a local independant that I have used for years for all my MOT and servicing work.

From recollection the belt kit was around £80/90, they fitted the kit, serviced (oil/filters only) and MOT'd the car for around £250.

I don't understand why it's so expensive in my area as everywhere I've tried has quoted between £500 and £800 for a cambelt change only!!!

Anyone else had a belt changed recently?

Price a cambelt kit not just the belt at a local factors, should be no more than £90, ask the garage to break down the bill, how long are they allowing for labour? Labour rates vary wildly between £25 and £90 ph around here (Carlisle).

What sort of garages are you looking at? Main dealers or independants? Ive always used smaller garages, the place I use is a local MOT station that ive used for the last 10 years or so, they are spot on and have a good local reputation.

The fact they are really cheap helps too!

Buy all your own bits first poss from shop4parts belt / tensioners / water pump / idler then get a price for said bits, is NJS services anywhere near you (do a google ) they do fixed price changes for reasonable money and failing that would you not try it yourself? way cheaper and its not hard.

Good news:D

My friend recommended a local garage and thay have quoted £270 for a cambelt change and interim service!!!!!(y)

just been quoted by Lipscomb of Aylesford Fiat main dealer £309.09 when i said that was a lot she said it is 2.5 hours work........
Oh in that case go ahead....not.....
Anybody in Kent know where i can get my cambelt done cheaper than £309?

Try Ebdens garage in Deal if it's not too far away. 01304 361819. Tell them Kev. Cook reccomended them for doing good work on his Multipla.

They are a small independent garage with a wide range of ex-main dealer mechanics. Very old school and very very good. Always serviced my Multipla. Worth getting a quote.

You could try JG Burgess in Sittingbourne; they are a Main Dealer. I have used them and found them to be reasonable, nice people too. I had ours done last year, was £290 at Medway Autos in Rainham. They've gone bust now :(.

Quick question on cambelts, what mileage do you get yours replaced? The service manual suggests check it at 72,000 miles, bearing in mind the damage done if it goes would like to get it changed well before it needs looking at, any suggestions?

No matter what the manual or servicing schedule says, 35000 - 50000 miles is when you should be getting it done.

If it fails, your car's effectively a pile of scrap!

Just had a quote for a cam belt cahange...... £125+VAT. I think thats pretty good. It's from motor-mech.co.uk 01216339824 They are Italian Car specialists. I traked them down from something i've seen on this forum. They are based in Birmingham city centre.
I haven't used them for work yet, has anyone?
My diesel Multipla has done nearly 79,000 mile and I think the cam belt was due 75,000, hope it will be ok till I book it in.

I was so suprised by the quote they gave me I forgot to ask about anti-roll bar bush replacements. Anyone want to ring them for a quote and post on here??

Hello, im new to this site and not very knowledgable when it comes to cars!! so anybody who can help would be most appreciated! ( i dont even know if im posting this correctly hehe!!)

Recently the fiat multipla we have was involved in a collision with another car and as a result the front bumber, bonnet and passenger side wing were crushed.
The insurance covered it all to be repared, but on its journey back to us from the garage the timing belt apparently snapped. The insurance company told us that the garage are supposed to deliver the vehicle back on a recovery truck, but that was not the case. They later admitted that they were driving it back to our home themselves, thus the belt breaking. They told us that if it had been re-fitted then the garage that did it should still have it under warranty but we do not think this is so!
Basically they are not willing to pay for its repair even though they were driving a vehicle when they should not have been!
Anyway, my point is, does anybody know of or has had a timing belt snap shortly after a collision, is it possible this may be a cause of snap?? if so the insurance should cover the costs????

Any answers or advice would be welcome as we dont really know what we are dealing with, nobody seems to know!!!
thank you :)

Sorry dont know anywhere in Dorset, But I would ask exactly what they are changing.
I agree with Jtdman, take the oppertunity to have the timing belt idler wheel ,tensioner and definately the water pump changed, these are about £ 20-£30 each to replace. I would and did go further, Replace Aux belt, aux belt idler, aux belt tensioner, my tensioner was worn after 66000, same again £20-30 each. About £170 -£200 for quality parts.

Had my cam belt changed today by the Italian Car Specialist in Birmingham City Centre. They managed to do it the same day and also noticed that I needed a new ancillary belt.
Previously I said they would do the cam belt only for £125+vat, I got that wrong sorry.
I.C.S. got the lot done for £240.10.
Thats £74.72 for the cam belt kit, £15.43 for the ancillary belt, £38.63 for ancillary belt adjustable tensioner, £80 labour.

I also asked them about the knocking I have on the front near side. Reckon nearside front anti-roll bar linkage fowling lower wishbone. Not un-safe but it's gonna have to wait till after i've been to Scotland.
