Cam Sensor

I am running a 98R 2l 20v Marea with (apparently so the code reader says) faulty cam (phase) and crank sensors. This means it will not start whilst hot (or even mildly warm!).
Due to a dealer saying they would charge £1000 to replace the cam sensor I am looking for alternative ways of curing it!
It is proving very difficult to find out anything about this engine though! Like, where on earth is the cam sensor!I had a bizarre notion that it might be near the top of the engine, being where the cams are. But as the dealer claims they need to take the engine out....
To add to the curiousness factor, I do not have and never have had any lights staying on, on the dashboard to suggest an 'engine fault'. The engine otherwise seems perfectly OK, idling nicely, running well.
Anybody got any suggestions?

Take it to the garage, give them money. You won't be able to fix it yourself.

If you are lucky, you can rebuild the sensor. As for my car the wires of the sensor is shorted among themselve due to heat. (the shield of the wire melt)so I rebuilt the wire & so far my car works fine & save my pocket!!!!
