Evening all....

I have a odd problem with my Uno now.

Yesterday morning, I got into muy car, and was almost overwhelmed by the petrol fumes!

I have no idea where it is coming from, there is no "one strongly smelling point" you see.

One day last week, there was a random leak from where the downpipe connects to the fuel tank - I disconnected and reconnected it tightly. Stopped the leak. No idea what caused that though.

The only thing I can think of is that the oily rag i have in the back of the car, which I used to dry up the small ammount of fuel that leaked out the tank. Saturday was one of the nice warm days, and I can only think that the rag heated up in the boot and the fumes were released. I threw the rag in the bin yesterday and kept the car windows open overnight, but it does still smell in there.

Has anyone go any suggestions on what to check as to what might be causing this?

First of all, check the fuel pipes under the bonnet. If these leak they can get into the ventilation vents and enter the cabin giving a strong smell of fuel.

If the smell is only apparent in the cabin, check the fuel pipes as they run INSIDE the cabin itself. If one is leaking you'll get a very strong smell of fuel. The fuel pipes run down the driver's side of the car, adjacent to the inner sill. You'll have to pull up the carpet to check though any leaks should show as damp spots.

Lastly, tip the rear seats fully forward, pull up the carpet and then remove the small oval cover that sits above the fuel tank. Check to see if the fuel pipe connections are secure and that there are no fuel leaks. Also check that the fuel tank itself isn't leaking as fumes can enter the cabin via the oval cover as it isn't air tight.

Good luck, and don't go lighting any cigarettes!

Have looked around a bit, the boot and under seat carpet it going through it's 2nd "quick wash" in the washing machine. This reaked, so I'm wondering if my spare can has leaked somehow.

I took the oval cover off, this was definitely airtight as was a bitch to un-stick from the floor.

I looked at the pipes in the engine bay and they all looked fine, now all I need to do is wait for the carpet to finish it's spin cycle, then dry it and put it back in.

I hope it doesn't make the washing machine stink of petrol from now on! :(
