Hi guys
I trust you are all well.

I have a 2002 1.1 Fiat Uno Mia and last week I drove into a pothole at night that was full of water. The engine switched off immediately but from that point to my home was all downhill so I put it into gear and it kick started but was misfiring erratically.

I stopped outside my gate but after opening the gate it was battling to start and when it did a few times I wasn't able to get it to run as as soon as soon as i took my foot off the accelerator it would die off and even if u didn't take my foot off it would still die down but only lasted a few seconds longer.

I eventually gave up n got some help to get it pushed into my yard as it was raining and it was at night.

Once in the yard I tried cranking several times not going for more than ten seconds at a time to avoid damaging the starter. It would crank but not starting or any signs of combustion in any of the 4 cylinders, i checked the spark plugs some wer wet some wer dry but all had black soot. I replaced the plugs. Tried to start now it wasn't cranking at all. Wen I turn the key on the first click the dashboard lights are on but wen I turn on the second click the entire dashboard goes dead. I suspected the battery may now be low but the lights seem bright if switched on and the horn is loud as if the battery is healthy. I have the battery charged and try again but the same issue persists. I then put the car in neutral and have the tyres chocked and I short the starter terminals but all I hear is a click which means the brushes have now gone due to all the cranking. I have the starter removed and tested its in fact the brushes so I have new brushes fitted and once tested works like new. So I fit the starter back in and the engine is now cranking again but still can't seem to hear any combustion in any of the cylinders. I remove each spark plug and have it tested by having it connected to the lead and earthing on the engine I crank but I don't see any of the plugs sparking even though they are all new. I suspect it might be the coil pack or module. I decided to replace the module and once I did I tried cranking but still not starting I checked for spark there is now spark but no improvement on getting it started. I checked for any loose wires there was a loose small wire behind the alternator I pushed it back in it was the battery light which goes off wen the engine is running. But I tried starting again with that cable now in. No improvement. Still doesn't start. I don't see any signs of the engine being hydrolocked as none of the spark plugs had water on them only fuel due to the constant cranking n some of the cylinders may have gotten flooded with fuel. I tried turning the engine by hand to see if there's anything that feels different but it feels pretty normal to me. I'm nowhere close to a mechanic this is my first uno. I have checked the timing and the timing has not jumped, it's the same as I set it 6 months ago and I have been using it to work and back every Monday to Friday ever since.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem before but managed to find the culprit? Kindly assist me please any help would be much appreciated 🙏

If cylinder has air , fuel , compression and healthy spark at correct time it should fire.
Dead right has to one of these. Start with making sure its sparking. If I remmeber these had points and if they are dirty or closed it will never go.

How big was the pot hole, did the front of the car get submerged in water, it is possible if the engine has sucked water into the air intake that the reason it stoped so abruptly was the engine hydrolocked engines can’t compress water and it tends to do an awful lot of damage if this happens

I’d suggest doing a compression test first of all.
