sounds like he meant that if they were drum brakes on the rear, he'd have to take the drum housing apart to get to the shoes. So what he means is, he just takes the wheel off, and has full access to the discs, pads and calipers (the braking system for that wheel)-nice and easy and simple to fix if ther eis an issue

i'd be fairly sure you will be fine driving...lets put it this way, i was driving around with no pads left on my brakes-metal to metal...this is bad...so i am sure you will be fine if its just a little squeel! The rear brakes dont do much anyway when driving-they come on under harder breaking, extra load in the car or handbrake, generally the braking is done at the front wheels.

That's the one, no drum indeed! He won't have a chance to look until sunday, but school is within walking distance, so I only really go out to the supermarket and other places if the weather is nice (hahaha:D), so it wont get much use in the next few weeks I suspect :)

you could just take the wheel that are suspect off yourself to have a quick check on how much of the brake pad you have left is visible with wheel off and may need torch it may put your mind to rest on it.
Also if you have a sticky brake caliper as Clivvy said earlier if you do use car have a check when you stop for nasty burning smell near wheels give you idea if sticky caliper..Do not be a muppet like some and go putting your finger through wheel to see if brake disc is hot ..been there done it not do it again ..ouch :)
the discs will be hot anyway if you just braked to stop just have sniff as they say.

A. I don't know what a brake pad even looks like
B. I doubt I can even take off the wheel lol!!

I might have a go though if I get bored, could take a picture and post it here as I will have absolutely no idea :) I am an absolute novice, but also female so it's acceptable I suppose :)

I did check to see if any weird smells already, but nothing obvious. Previous car smelt like rotten eggs so... This one seems rather nice in comparison! :D

sorry I did not know your mechanical experience was limited, but if you no longer have that odd noise from wheels you had before and no unusual burning heat smell near wheels would think be ok till your friend can whip the wheels off , will only take few minutes for each wheel for him to check pads and anything out of place or with the fear of being sexist looming in the air you could nip down nearest layby with spare wheel out by car and sure you get some mug to change your wheel for you while they do it quickly have check of pads...you will need to do it four times though ..by which time you may find yourself in back of cop car for wwhatever ladies in laybys get pulled for these days not sure how short a skirt you need for that either :) ...think you be ok till sunday though

Hahaha, I think I'll skip that idea!! I'll just wait for him to have a look :D Doubt I'll go anywhere anyway...

Just a little update on the issue, he's had a look and he said that the brake pads are wearing down, they're not really bad but he would recommend replacing them. He said the side he checked was also rubbing somewhere. There is also a scratch on the one I thought the sound was coming from, but it goes up and down so it's unlikely to be a stone that got caught from the direction of the scratch. So he's not really certain that it's the cause of the noise, but we'll replace them anyway and hope for the best.. :)
