Hi, we currently have a Fiat Ducato 2.0 petrol motorhome. We are keen on a Peugeot Hymer with a 2.5 turbo Diesel engine. While the vehicle is in great condition I am nervous about the cambelt engine. I had an old Toyota Camry where the cambelt snapped while we were driving it but due to the non interference nature of that engine nothing broke. I have also heard quite a few reports that the 2.5 does not have a good reliability reputation. Are these as bad as I have heard or is it urban legend? Is this a non interference engine?

If as I suspect it is the same Sofim engine as the Iveco Daily 2.5 and 2.8 single overhead cam the cam belt change is fairly straight forward, however as with many modern diesel engines if belt breaks it is an interference engine and causes catastrophic damage including bending con rods.
If you have the engine code etc, I may be able to give you further information.
I would say in the five Iveco Daily from 80Hp non turbo 2.5 on up to the 130Hp TDi vehicle I have owned,if in good condition and cam belt changed when due, along with regular oil and filter changes they prove very reliable, I even put the engine from a 1998 Ducato 2.8 version in a boat as it was one of the last non ECU versions and ran it for 4 years before selling on.:)
