So I've been informed that I may be riding the clutch or my exhaust may have a leak in it somewhere, I'm thinking I've been riding the clutch as I'm a new driver. Does this now mean I'm going to have to replace it? How would I know if my clutch has gone in the first place? And how much would it cost me as I read it could cost up to £1400 and I didn't even pay that much for the car.
Thanks

If it was your clutch.
A clutch kit would probably set you back about £200 - £250 ish plus fitting.
I think you would know of your clutch had gone by the difficulty of changing gears

Hi, and welcome, :)

ok - basics.. your clutch is a metal plate (smooth)
and a Friction plate(grippy - like covered in cork)

it's reliant on a good clean contact between the 2 parts - can be contaminated - or glazed ( slippery / shiny)

the smell is where the grippy side isn't actually gripping fully.. and is slipping .. generating heat..and then smoking..:(

you CAN make this happen by being a bit out of sync..

However - the test for YOU is get it on a decent main road.. do a few miles in the ONE (5th /6th )gear,
then just pull over into a layby /safe place,
if it's still smoky / smelly there is a fault.., as you won't have "slipped" the clutch for 10 mins..

clutches are NOT a simple fix..as there are quite a few parts to remove for access - but I'd have thought nearer £800 - labour rates change hugely.. dependant on area..

Thanks for both your replies. I can change gears in my car but other people can't? They can't seem to find them? I took my friend with me to view the car and he said it's fine if I'm able to change the gears there isn't a problem, he can also use my car fine but he did say it could be because he's used to **** cars lol
Hi Charlie, I've tried putting my seat back some more and just went for a little drive and no burning smell I will pop out in a little while and try what you suggested. Thanks for being so helpful.

Since moving my seat back I've had no smells so I was riding the clutch ooops! The car has 109000 miles on it it's a 2007 car. I thought I was getting a bargain. How much do u reckon I got it for ?

My clutch sounds like it working fine, when shifting down a gear my revs do go straight up. With regards to other people driving it it's weird I know where the gears are so can slip it in easily but it's like the grooves aren't there. I drove my uncles vw golf and the gear stick felt weird to me as I'm used to mine but when he drove mine he went first to second and then accidentally put it back in first because he couldn't find third.
