Hi guys.

I just went for a quick drive after changing my sparkplugs to Denso Iridiums (very nice by the way! Noticeable change in response) and it wasn't a particularly hard braking drive, more of a hard accelerating one. I put my fingers on my brake discs after the drive and f*ck me... they were hot. I figured they'd be warm but not so hot as to burn my fingers. Is that normal? Also, what's everybody elses brakes like? Mine seem to be a bit turd but then again, I don't know what discs and pads are on the car. They were put on new when I got the car by the dealer.... so I'm guessing he didn't splash out too much :D

Quite normal by the sound of it. A good test is to go on a run and then come to a stop without using the brakes at all (quite tricky). If you can manage that then the discs shouldn't be warm at all.

The best check is difference in temperature between all 4 discs. If you have an odd one out then you know for certain it's binding and with the price of fuel it's well worth getting it sorted (y)

Cheers Argo. Thankfully I checked all four at the time and they were all of equal temperature. (y)

I've just come back from holiday and I left the car in long stay for a week. When I drove it away, I could hear the pads rubbing on the disc  Now, I know my discs rust quite easily and quickly (cheapo discs?) but is that also the norm for Stilos? Once the car was going and I'd braked a few times, the problem seemed to go away.

Anyway, the car is into my specialist tomorrow to have the Selespeed re-calibrated as the clutch is a bit jerky and gearchanges a bit abrupt... not too suprising as the car has done 45k. I'm going to get the brakes looked at at the same time... maybe they just need a fluid change to bring back their bite (y)

I drove a Pug 207 1.6 while I was on holiday and bloody hell, I almost put my wife through the windscreen when I tried the brakes for the first time... made me think I should get mine looked at. By the way, the 1.6 Pug was utter sh*t. The engine was so weak I had to use 1st SO much it was obscene... and it only had 7k on the clock.

That all sounds completely normal again to me. Park a motor up for a week just after a downpour and you can be pretty sure the discs will have a gone a little rusty and also stick as you drive off.

I know exactly what you mean about hire cars and you might find this old thread of mine interesting.

The brakes on the Meriva were fierce indeed but personally I prefer adrenalin over excessive mechanical assistance any day ;)

:D I did have a chuckle at my own stupidity after I did it... not one of my finest moments :D

It's ok, I'm forever having them, lol. O, lets remove the HT lead off of the spark plug on a Lawnmower when it's running, bloody hurt:p. Was only 14 at the time, and though I knew everything, but everyone learns from their mistakes, lol.

I did the same thing on an old Lancia of mine - trouble is I left all the skin off the tips of 3 fingers on the disc....... not a mistake I'll make again

Lancia Beta rear brake calipers were/are notorious for 'sticking'..... as I found out. Perhaps the gunmetal blue colour of the disc was a warning I should have paid more attention to before seeing how hot it was

Ha ha. People were probably looking at you driving along with glowing rear discs thinking, "Look at him, he's got those new fangled carbon ceramic brake discs... cool!" :D

i had a stuck calliper on my old ibiza, but didnt know, drove 140 miles up the M6 and when i got to my mates farm i swear down it was glowing. Disc and pads were ruined.

I have also had the discs/pads smoking on my stilo when chasing a burgler in it. That wasnt healthy as i think they glazed
