General Boot Space Question.

General Boot Space Question.

I've noticed that in the handbook it says to change the bolts and spacesaver if you change from steel to alloys or vice versa.

Searching through the forum it seems like the bolts are the same and I'm guessing the spare should be fine as the circumference of the 2 wheels is very similar.

Is that right?

Another member on here was concerned about using the lock nut bolt on the space saver. I understand that in the UK you get wheel locks on the non-POP models so you only have 3 'original' bolts for the space saver. Not to sure if it's referring to this
So if you have sourced new alloys don't forget to get lock nuts for them.:)

The original bolts are the same as the bolts used on the alloys.

I phoned my dealer about getting a set of locking wheel bolts, after an eternity of hold music they told me it would take 10 working days and cost me £36 to get some in.

I've bought some McGard 27170 bolts, hopefully they'll fit. Lots of conflicting info on the web.

Any guesses how much a set of steelies might be worth?

I always buy the lock keys off the dealer so it's on the system. If the lock key goes missing you can re-order it.

Re your last question - is this the retail price of a new one from the dealer ?

You will get a key card with the key's code on there :)

Why not use the steelies for winter tyres?

I made an appropriate change to the above.
Maxi is correct about the 'card'. It was in the new set but was missing on the 'old set' along with the lock nut.
So I would suggest putting this 'piece of paper' in the 'Black wallet' with the code for the ignition key.

Err.. Confused now!

I would suggest putting an ad up on classifieds and see what you can get for them.
If you cann't get decent money for them then just keep them and use them for the winter.
JR bought a set sometime back - I've an idea how much he paid for them but he might PM you with the price so you can keep your price 'keen'.

Hardly a secret if you know how to use the search button.

I paid £150 for a set of 4 but they were absolutely brand new & still had the 'nobbles' on the tyres. The rubber alone would have cost more than that.

Used, with part worn tyres, I guess it's down to what they're worth to someone on the day. These are on ebay just now:

Hope this helps you decide what to do.

It's all the talk of winter tyres - makes Maxi go all weak and wobbly.

It does! :p I have contradicted myself haven't I!

Depending on how much life is left in the tyres you may be best of just selling them as tyres. You're unlikely to find a set of steel wheels quite as nice as a new set so if it's not worth selling them (if you're only getting £25 a wheel!) then I'd just use them for winter wheels if that's what you want to do of course :)

Selling a wheel at a time. I wonder if anyone is going to buy the 3 remaining wheels ? He should have charged more for the first one.

I did a rough calculation.
If you gained 3mpg i.e. from 40mpg -> 43mpg at €100 for a set of Eco wheels and petrol at €6.70 a gallon the pay back period is ?

Answer of xxxx8,333xxx miles ?

Wheels picked up, squeezed in the boot and fitted!

When I got in for a quick spin the ride was awful - I could feel every bump in the road. I checked the tyre pressure and they were at 3.1 bar though. At proper pressures the ride isn't much different from the 14' steelies.
