Been doing this for years on cars, compared to most cars the bonnet isn't that heavy, its of fairly decent construction so no issues there, you just need to find the right size and strength of strut to fit.
Fortunately your not the
first to think of such things and you can buy pairs of struts for the punto on eBay, so its as simple as buy a kit and fit it.....

No need for bonnet lifters anyway,
just get a Swamp donkey to hold bonnet up like this,
thats pretty much how i used to work on my Range Rover, climb into the engine bay.
suspension + body lift = needing a ladder to change the wiper blades
