Blu's Suzuki Ignis Sport

Introduction

So been toying with getting one for a while but today i actually bit the bullet and bought one...

2004 Suzuki Ignis Sport - Its just clocked past 44k miles so not bad mileage for a 10 year old car. For them that don't know it is a 1.5vvti engine - seems a very good engine, pulls from very low down but also very revvy. It weighs in at under a tonne. Fantastic handling little thing too, really holds on through the corners, i'm impressed! Its pretty much a japanese panda 100hp except a little lighter and a litter faster out of the box. Still feels like a small car even after driving a cinq daily although i do feel like i'm sat REALLY high up!

Not much done to it, just has a SuzukiSport grill, which are supposedly pretty rare and desirable amongst suzuki people - certainly improves the look of the car no end (AC rad has been painted black so its not as noticeable through the grill too).

And it has some aftermarket alloys, not sure on the brand i didn't check with decent tyres (Toyo T1-Rs) - but i got the oem wheels with good tyres too - might keep them as winter wheels.

Oh and square plates are not standard either.

Anyhow, some pics......

The mk1 CRX is the lads new car, he bought it yesterday to replace the Iggy. Only 6 of them mk1 CRX in the UK according to howmanyleft, was a very cool car indeed. nearly all fibreglass and only weighs a bit more than a cinquecento except it has almost triple the power lol.

All in all I am most pleased - it is like a fiat though and the red is a bit flat - i shall machine polish it soon and hopefully it will come up really nice.

Massive thank you to Simon a.k.a buttflap212 for the lift and good to see you again fella ;)

Comments welcome.

So we have hayabusa itbs finished in nice wrinkle black paint.
Trumpets, Pipercross filter and backing plate.
Walbro 255lph in tank pump.
A fuel pressure regulator with gauge.
RX8 injectors.
Custom made inlet manifold off PartBox's old race car.

A pretty exciting delivery if I do say so myself.

Wow I've not written anything here for a long while.

The car is in the garage now yes..

As is often the way with me,I have bought stuff but not much has happened to the car.

I got a set of the factory option fog lights, they need sanding and painting and fitting at some point.

I've got and actually fitted a Cusco c-pillar brace.

I've got a whiteline rear ARB kit which I don't seem to have any pictures of.

There's probably more stuff I'm not recalling atm too. Generally speaking though I've not really done much bar keeping it clean and maintained. I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with cars in general at the mo. I might keep the Ignis and crack on with fitting all the many parts amassed and getting a boring family wagon. But I'm also tempted to sell it and then buy an actual nice and quick estate car to replace it that would also be a decent family car for going away.

And here's just a few random pics of it..

Those last 2 pics are at an Ignis meet - pretty random seeing mine next to a stock suspension one, never realised how much lower it was until i got to park next to a standard one lol

People always say that, and yes i can see through the window perfectly fine - the rear brace is more of an obstruction that any of the stickers

And yep, currently just got the 100hp and the Ignis. I rarely use the Ignis since Ede was born though tbh, her car seat doesnt fit at all easily and has to go in the back cause you cant turn the passenger airbag off in the Ignis - well you can by just unplugging the airbag controller but if you do that the seatbelt pretensioners wouldnt work in the event of a crash - added to this she is in a rear facing seat still cause she is small its just awkward. And its not hugely comfy with the coilovers etc etc. Its only insured for 5k miles a year atm and i doubt i'll even do that in it. But it does make me smile still everytime i drive it

Don't really have much to report on the Iggy, it's passed its MOT with no advisories since I last posted. Nothing mechanical has changed.

But there has been one significant change to the car.... There is now a lack of stickers. And no, it's not cause I couldn't see [emoji23] - I just started to get bored of them and fancied a cleaner look.

So as that is the only real update I'll just post a selection of pics from last few months instead.

Fake Snow vs Real Snow - The real stuff defo clings on for longer lol

Well I guess this needs an update.

Car now has everything poly bushed at the front, a mix of powerflex and superpro bushings.
It has nagisa fender braces
Type 1 and 2 front lower braces

Happy with the results, the fender braces in particular have made a huge difference, way more than I expected, makes me feel a little better about how much they cost lol

And also has a set of what the Ignis people call Joey mod headlights, basically opened and housings sprayed satin black, which I have since restored with a 3m kit and ceramic coated to protect them.

While I had the front off I did the aircon delete, it's not worked for years and I haven't really missed it so thought may as well save the weight. Actually not as much weight as I expected, didn't weigh it but all the bracketry was aluminium so really wasn't all that heavy. But with that out you could see a slam panel support and the manifold heat shield through the grill and it looked messy, so they've had a coat of flat black paint too.

Excuse my ignorance but what do they do?

Don't worry, I've had that exact question alot since i fitted them lol. They tie the a-pillar and suspension strut together to eliminate flex of the shell. Really didn't think it would make a huge difference but it really has. Its feels much more like the suspension is doing all the work and the front is more solid, hard to describe but its improved how it feels no end (y) I've seen them fitted to few cars but never experienced them before, i know mx5 people rave about them for example. Thought I'd give it a go, i was feeling flush at the time when i bought them lol

So little update here.

The fake split rim studs on the wheels have been annoying me for a while, found some replacements on ebay, listed as for Rota wheels but thought i'd give them a bash.. They offer quite a few different colours but i went with gold to match the red. black and gold theme of the car.

They are just pressed in so to get old ones out was a simple as tapping from behind with a screwdriver and hammer. Then after trying to put several into my spare wheel to decide on the best technique i found the best (or best i tried) was to use a neoprene washer over it, then use a socket on an extension and a hammer to tap them in, used a bit of plusgas to help them go in easier. There's 30 per wheel and so far I've done 3 of the 4 wheels and only damaged one stud - ran out of washers is why i only done 3. I was hoping i could reuse a few but they all got mullered from the hammering. Got some more now so will do the other wheel soon.

Heres some before and after pics

20190628_143404.jpg

And here is a little timelapse of one wheel, 40mins condensed into 35seconds lol - actually a much bigger job than this video makes out. Although the other 2 I've done were quicker without my daughter 'helping'.

Wow I've neglected this thread, as if its been like 10 months since i updated!!

Well where since that last post alot has changed, not just the car!! Guess I'll just go through my old photos and try make some sense of it all.

Following the gold studs being fitted i did a detail on the car, still comes up well

One random day i started prepping the replacement rear arms ready for poly bushes, although that didnt actually happen at that point.
Cleaned up, zinc primered and then some other primer over the top of that as i was worried the zinc primer might react with the intended black paint that was to come.

Then towards end of last year my wife and I bought our first house, Ignis made an excellent moving house race van (once I took the rear brace out at least), actually moved nearly the entire house with the Ignis and just had a rental van one day to move big stuff like beds and our big solid oak dining table, these were just a touch to big for the littly Iggy lol.

And i believe this was the very last pic of the team before we left the old coach house flat that has been home for last 4 years or so.
20191023_142945.jpg

Obviously after the move there wasn't much time for playing with cars for a while but here is the new driveway and garage the Iggy calls home.
20200102_140151.jpg

I did at some point refit the rear brace but i can't find a pic, but its back in i promise.

....And take a breath, we are upto 2020 now..

Early January was MOT day, it passed flying colours of course.
20200107_141246.jpg

In March the Iggy got into disguise and gatecrashed a forum meet that was local to me.

20200315_114233.jpg

Shortly after I went for a trip to buy some new wheels (well almost new) - They are Sparco Asetto Gara in 15x6.5j ET37 wrapped in Michelin PilotSport3 tyres
20200404_134054.jpg

And then not long after that we all went into lockdown as I'm sure you are abundantly aware of - I've been furloughed the whole time so found some time to play.
So rear arms previously mentioned got painted black and the summit mid-brace digged out from when we moved house and all fitted up.

20200504_154109.jpg
20200504_154122.jpg

And test the car after all these new bits, took for the weekly supermarket thrash.
20200509_132349.jpg

Net result. :bang:
20200509_132102.jpg

So some adjustment has been done, only done one side and haven't been for a test drive yet, thats us all up to date on whats happened to the car i think.
20200519_141629.jpg
20200519_145851.jpg
I did file the edges and primer and then put a thick coat of underseal on so it shouldnt ever rust after that choppy choppy.

Ok so further to the last update, the other thing that is happening is I decided to sell the ITBs that i had bought ages ago and start collecting stuff to turbo convert the car... now due to the fact i've kinda decided to go full send I need lots of fancy expensive parts so this is going to take a while merely due to the costs involved.

But so far I've amassed the following:
20200408_155259.jpg
The chosen turbo for now, maybe upgrade this once it is all up and running but it should do for my aims i think.. its a garrett GT1752s as found on some volvo T5 engines

20200414_154854.jpg
A cast turbo manifold, this has the option to run an external wastegate but for the time being the turbo i have is internally gated so that will just be blanked off, but perhaps in the future if i swap turbo......

20200416_165539.jpg
A billet adjustable wastegate actuator, currently fitted with a 4psi spring, nice and low for getting it up and running but that will get changed - the stock actuator is like 15psi or something and although i probably will end up running something around there i'll start low and build up.

20200505_144225.jpg
Stainless flange and pipe for the turbo outlet, its 2.5" same as the outlet on the turbo, ultimately i want the whole exhaust to be 2.5" all the way to the back (stock is 1.75")

20200527_133338.jpg
High flow return style fuel rail, car is returnless from factory but this will be modified to be return style with rising rate reg - I already have a reg in the garage but no picture.

And the final bit atm, delivered yesterday, the engine this will all be built around.
20200611_113928.jpg
20200611_120237.jpg
20200611_121654.jpg

Its a M16A from a ZC31s Swift Sport, so thats the 1.6 swift sport from around the same time as the Ignis was new. Its basically the same block and the Ignis' 1.5 with the exception that it has oil squirters for the pistons. Other difference are 83mm throw on crank rather than 78mm, the connecting rods are 2mm shorter and the pistons completely different design. Stock both engines are 11:1 CR. The inlet side is different with a alloy manifold and fly-by-wire throttle. So not hugely different but i wanted the oil squirters and secondly you can buy more off shelf internals for these over the 1.5 - so plan is a complete tear down of this new engine, rebuild it up with 9.0:1 forged pistons and frrged connecting rods, have a cnc block guard fitted, arp mains and head studs. Then bang it in with a standalone ecu to control it.

Well engine is all stripped down, I didn't really take many pictures or anything but here's a little video of the aftermath. Did actually take the crank out and the oil squirters after this video as well.

Overall, looks very good condition - now waiting for the machine shop to get back to me, been waiting few days so hopefully he is just busy and the company survived lockdown as this cnc guard will cost alot more somewhere else where they never have done one and dont have the files for the cnc saved and need to design it all from scratch

January update..

Not really much to say. The cinq and the Alfa arrived last year and all this stuff has been buried and inaccessible.

Car is mostly fine, MOT due in few days and it's now decided, after all these years to throw the engine management light on.

Pre-cat lambda sensor heater circuit error. So for the sake of 40quid I'm just gonna replace that sensor without even looking at the car and hope it really is the sensor and not a wire or connector cause I'm just too busy to play with this car right now lol.

So I guess some pictures [emoji2369]

Earlier in the year when I was allowed to go places I went up York a few times, to my old house - as my sister is building a house next to it so I was really meant to be doing that all year had it not been for a pandemic.
Weird for me to see this car there though!

And just this pic cause I like it lol
20201225_144004.jpeg

You might notice it's on the old wheels again, that partly cause I need to change the suspension a bit to make them fit right and then get and alignment but also partly cause I was driving to and from York and I figured why not use up these not as good tyres just driving up and down motorways.
But actually right now it's on its winter wheels..

I'll get back to this project once the panda is fixed and the Alfas also fixed (See my other threads).
