General Blown Away and put to Shame!

i was reving up an astra coupe, and blew it away... left it about two lightposts away...
same night i raced a 307... but somethign was fishy... the thing was slow at first and soon passed by a quarter mile ATLEAST! probably till the turbo lag kicked out... because it made a really harmonic melody....
AHHH... TURBO... BAR... BHP... VRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMM[^]

I was hoping Alfanige could shed some light on releasing some BHP from the 1.6, but alas he can't.:(

quote: No point in buying a diesel if you cover less than 20,000 miles a year!

Why do you say this, how much is the diference in the prices for Diesel/gas in UK?

And you know for the kind of performance that a JTD has, you would have to buy a 2.0 gas engine, so how expensive is that?

Also some of us diesel ownwers just like to have a Diesel car with lot´s of torque, because it´s very easy to drive and you don´t have to change gears all the time to get the car going[8D] it´s not all about economy. (i have an average fuel consuption of 8l/100Km).

Finnaly even if i didn´t do 30000 KM a yer (wich i do, by the way) i would never buy a 1.2 STILO, maybe a 1.2 Punto or a 1.6 Stilo[8D].

And don´t believe everything you read on the magazines about diesel/gas compairs, drive one and make your own deductions, after that you won´t be buying another gas car.

£2000 over the asking price for the privaledge of a diesel makes it hardly worth while unless you plan on doing big milage or keeping the car for a great many years! :) Simple as that...

I traded a diesel for my 1.2 Stilo since my milage dropped from 25k a year...

According to whatcar? the 1.9 JTD 115 is the pick of the range. I've had a blast in my mates and it is good. Lots of low down rev range torque.

1.6 Dynmamic 5 door.

I was meaning buy a diesel for its tuning potential:D

And have a look on Jamjar, they aren't that much more than the petrol ones, certainly not 2k TC, I only paid about £500 more than u, and by the time u added your spoiler and upgraded your alloys?

Anyway, I'm only winding you up, I realise you can't be chopping and changing your car every two mins, but by the time you do come to trade in, the 140bhp multijet should be out, worth a look?

If i hadn't bought the 1.2 i would have specced my own car, would have cost £4k more. Reasoned that if i picked the cheaper of the two i could get my moneys worth quicker and even with poor residuals i wouldn't be loosing out too much!

Also got fed up with diesels cars, over rated, yeah loads of BHP and torque but for a whopping 2000rpm max, i rather have my engine rev a few thou more so i can enjoy the refinement!

Yeah diesel's can be very quiet..... inside, stand outside one though and you know instantly its an oil burner, even the top VW Golf sounds like a tractor if you stand next to one!

I've got to keep ahead of the Jones' in my street, no clattering diesel first thing in the morning, i've had enough of letting the curtain twitchers know i was off to work! :p

I will have another diesel one day, but by then i'll be expecting petrol refinement, 180bhp from a turbo'd 1.8 and still get 50mpg! :I And that will be the base model! :p

When I bought mine James it was £8495 new, the 1.9 JTD was £11000 and the Abarth was £12400, that was June 2003. (Jamjar)

I know their prices have come down again, mine is on their at £9100, the JTD was £10600 and the Abarth £11600, that was when I checked last in February! (Jamjar)

At those prices I'd have pushed my finances and gone for the JTD or Abarth, the reason I went for mine at the time was because I wanted to make a cash purchase, the idea of borrowing money to buy a motor did not appeal to me and £8.5 was a figure I could raise without having to borrow. This made sense at the time, but in hindsight I should have borrowed £3k and bought the model I wanted, never mind you live and learn!

I reckon it was a decent buy though, because a year on with 6500 miles covered and the additions and it's in mint condition, I reckon I'd get £6.5k, so my losses are probably less than others who have purchased Stilos from dealers.

I hope this answers your questions James!:D

Yeah, mate, agree with what you say, I got mine for £9600 from Jamjar, so was a total bargain, at the time the Abarth was only about 11k, so I did consider it, but for a young 'un like me the insurance was ridiculous, also I do too many miles to afford the insurance. I know what you mean about wishing you had pushed your finances just that little bit, I really wish mine had leather, but it was more because I would have had to wait on a factory order than the extra cost which stopped me!

Stiloboy, I reckon you'd get a pleasant surprise with the Stilo JTD, its not like the Diesels of old you describe, I used to drive TD's at work a few years ago, and they were like you say tiresome, with a really narrow power band delivery, I can honestly say the closest car I have driven in terms of power delivery to my Stilo is a V6, there is v. little turbo lag, and there is always plenty of go, right from low revs, I find this most usefull with motorway driving, which I do a fair bit of.

I'm not trying to say my car is any better or worse than anyone else's, or even that you should rush out and get one, just that I can't really rate it highly enough for its superb combo of effortless performance and fantastic economy:D

Driven various old and new diesels, all similar, never driven anything that made me sit up and say wow! :( Not yet anyway.

So you paid over £2k more than i paid for my Stilo, so it would have been what £4k from retail for a JTD to what i paid for my 1.2. [:0] Could have replaced my Mini and got a decent one for that difference! :p

Maybe my next car though! In 4 or so years! :)

agree on stiloboy about revs ... diesels are low rev machines and you got lots of adrenaline driving in 6000revs ... thats a true pleasure ..

but take a look at ... lets say ... alfa 147 2.0 ts and alfa 147 diesel 140bhp ... and you will find out that todays diesels are very, very, very close to the petol engines ... stand next to bmw 320d and let me know if you hear that its diesel!
