Thoughts please

XUD9 TE engine and it pumps out black smoke (over fueling)

So what I do know

• Engine just fully serviced (low mileage 45K)
• All filters changed
• Valve clearances adjusted and in spec
• New cambelt (plus water pump and tensioners) and timing correct
• Injection pump timing checked with dial gauge and spot on
• Plenty of turbo boost (you can really feel when it comes on)
• Does not touch any oil what so ever
• 4 reconditioned injectors from Diesel Bob (with new washers and heat shields).
• 4 new heater plugs (I know that will have no issues with black smoke)
• New proper pipe clips on all the fuel lines
• All new injector leak off pipes
• Clean gauss on fuel pickup pipe.

Injection Pump

• Bosch
• Boost pin on a less aggressive profile.
• Other setting should be untouched as this is a low mileage camper, bought off an older couple.

Issue
Unless the throttle is very lightly pressed it black smokes, which at night is excessive. Basically it will put down a blanket of smoke. I disconnected the boost pipe, but when revved (stationary), it will black smoke. Because of this, I’ve assumed that its not the boost mechanism causing the smoke and assumed someone had adjusted the smoke screw.

Smoke screw, this has been backed off 4.5 turns, and there is no difference in performance or smoke.

Makes no difference with the EGR enabled or disabled.

Also of note, something has to be going on, as there is far too much power, for a camper, the usual complaint being its an underpowered lump, most definitely not in this case. Regarding the power, I just toodle around in the van so don’t care if I loose some power.


Any thoughts or suggestions (scrapping is not an option)

Question – is there a cold start device within the pump?

EGR valves can stick partially open which will make for heaps of black smoke under any sort of load.
