(n) just had a catastrophic breakdown in my 1.9 mjet, just going down the road no more than thirty went to hit the accelerator and huge whoosh and bang, presuming turbo first , blue smoke to start with and no power, then within ten seconds the engine started to grind, so much that the whole car was shaking so naturaly turn ignition off, to my surpise it contued to run but also rev iratically, so had to stall it, presuming complete engine failure????, not amused its only done 17k, any ideas on this one guys?????:bang:

First thought would be turbo failure but as its an '08 i thought they would have sorted the dodgy batch of turbos by now. You got any mods?

is it remapped?

If it continued to run when you turned the ignition off, you had diesel run away, which means the engine continued to run on its own engine oil rather than the fuel. Sounds more than just the turbo. Im not mechenicly minded, but if you had lots of blue smoke, and diesel run away oil has got into the cylinders.

Yeah just done a quick read up. The oil seals on the turbo have failed, thus filling the cylinders with oil, meaning the engine is running on the oil from the turbo, whats knowns as diesel run away. Will undoubtedly destroy the engine as the RPM will be far higher than what the engine is capable of, if you cut it out in time minimises the damage. Can be a scary thing to happen!

yeah turbo should be covered, my car on turbo 3 or 4, last tome also had intercooler and ecu, so should be ok that way.
pray they dont discover the remap!

Oh s**t, I told everybody and we have recently had it confirmed FIAT read these threads.
DOH!!!(n)

Get the car on a trailor and get it to Red-Dot...they'll take the remap off and then you can take it to FIAT...if you dont i'd be very suprised if they dont find the remap, because of the amount of damage its done they'll find anyway they can not to pay...i had my remap taken off last week because the turbo was on its way out and the young fella that took my map off has taken FIAT to court because they've refused to pay out for a new engine after the turbo blew saying a sensor on the car said it was due to an over rev!! the case has been in the courts for 2 yrs now....

At least if the map is off you'll have more chance of getting it done on the warranty?

Good luck getting it sorted mate...(y)

Well if Daver is right theres good chance they (Fiat or garage) has already seen this, than in conjunction with reg number & GP with orange wheels doesn't look to good!

Who says it needs engine/turbo anyway?

Frankly if you go down the induction/remap route then you know you are risking a problem down the line. Many people get more power without problems but a few do.
Whether or not the fault would have occurred without the remap is an unknown but Fiat are within their rights to refuse to pay for a repair when the car has been modified beyond original spec.

Its like over clocking a PC - you are putting more stress on the components than they were originally designed to handle. Anyone who thinks that doesn't risk problems is an idiot.

As for getting a map removed then taking to to a dealer I'm sorry but as an owner who sticks to the manufacturers guidelines I get angered by this. Ultimately if warranty claims are paid out in cases where modifications have caused faults then the costs of the product will have to go up. So owners not taking risks have to pay more.

If you have modified your car and it goes bang the least you can so is be straight and fess up.

If Fiat actually read this, then why aren't they doing anything about the complains we always see?

The million dollar question! At the end of the day, they are a company that build cars down to a price. It wouldn't be very good business acumen for them to be that responsive to customer issues. If they were, expect to be buying a FIAT Grande Punto for the same price as an A3...

With regard to FIAT dealers basing their warranty claims on what they read on a forum, I am sure there are various legalities with this which would not necessarily back them up if you took them to court over it. Letter of the law demands proof beyond reasonable doubt... Can they prove that that car they've seen online is ultimately yours? Can they prove that you haven't just been bullsh!tting the other people on the forum? As I said, I dunno about the legalities of it all, so was just chucking an idea out there.

That said, if you increase the power of your car by about 50% using only standard parts, as a previous post stated - accept the increased risk of a component failing.
