Hi all,

Is there a consensus on the go to software for Fiat/Alfa?

I'm referring to diagnostic and configuration software.

Is the software dealers use available to the public?

As far as I know most of the dedicated dealer diagnostics cost them many thousands of pounds and rely on a yearly deal with the manufacturers for the online connection servicing side.
I have been to auctions in the past where people buy the diagnostic equipment from the garage that has gone bust , thinking they will be able to use it, sadly not.
More recently I bought an old Toughbook laptop with touch screen etc. for £40 as it was running Windows 10 (I use Linux) just so that I could install publicly available Fiat diagnostic program (most here use MES multiecuscan, however one of my vehicles is a Fiat Scudo with a Peugeot engine so had to buy MAXIECU program) a company online called Gendan can give good advice and supply what you may need.
Going back to my point, on the Laptop was a load of Ford Dealer based Diagnostics, I deleted them as without the registered Ford connection it is unusable.:)

Thanks for the info. I'll check out MES.

You will.also need an OBD2 dongle.

Hi,

Noting this is Probably related to a
500x,

Member @s130 is probably a good point of reference

An owner of that FIAT model AND along time associate of MES,

There are potential issues with SGW in later builds of the 500x, restricting the usefulness of the "over the counter" software

Gendan guys were very helpful and their website has details re SGW issues on later vehicles:)

Choosing EOBD kit is not always that easy. For the DIYer on Fiat/Alfa then MES has been the goto product for a number of years now. I would not rule out MAXIECU either. However these require the use of a PC. There are affordable self contained devices by the likes of FOXWELL and their NT680 scanner but these are often a little more limited in function but great for "on the road" use.

As OP @Vanders is in Australia I don't see a recommended MES distributor in that region. For language then UK is probably best. However the software can be downloaded directly from the MES site and interface & cables purchased on eBay Australia. e.g. https://obd2australia.com.au/product-category/obd2-cables/

NOTE! When buying from an unofficial distributor I always recommend the OBDLINK SX interface as these always work unlike may cheap ELM interfaces.

ALSO. There is the option of MAXIECU (e.g. https://obd2australia.com.au/product/maxiecu-full-system-obd2-windows-scan-tool/) with the single vehicle option. This uses it's own interface (bluetooth) with built in multiplexer so adapter cables are not required. The software license and updates have no time limit whereas with MES updates etc. are only free for the first year.

MAXIECU has a little more coverage.

I suggest that all potential EOBD kit users check out exactly what each product will and won't do for their vehicle(s) AND if the coverage is something they wan't to get involved with or need

https://www.multiecuscan.net/VehicleSupportCheck.aspx

https://maxiecu.com/en/products/functionality-search/

PLEASE NOTE! Any links I've used other than to the MES or MAXIECU official sites were just found on a web search as possible examples/places etc. so I take not responsibility etc. for them.
