Hi, I am looking for advice. I am looking to buy a 2018/19 1.0 Firefly cross and I was 100% sure this was the model for me but a couple of people have said that it won’t be powerful enough for me as I will be doing regular motorway driving which doesn’t actually concern me but I do want to know if it has the power for speedy over taking as I live on winding country roads and frequently need to overtake farm vehicles. My current car does not have the power to do this safely or to pull out quickly onto busy roads or slip roads. Being able to have a quick burst of power is the main reason for buying a new car so I want to make sure I make the right choice. It would be great to hear what 1.0 owners think. I would ideally really get the 1.0 over the 1.3 due to costs and heard mixed reviews on the DCT auto.

Overtaking is restricted more by the volume of traffic coming at you much more than your cars power. I have a 0.9 litre Panda 4x4. I can easily overtake two articulated lorries on most A roads if required. It has ample power. and suprises me often with how easy it is to drive. Its just resting at 70mph and has plently in hand for emergencies and hills. I am sure its actual performance on the road is not noticably different to my 2.0TDI turbo VW Golf. Ok not as fast top speed, but who cares about that with all teh speed cameras you would be mad to go much faster than permitted. Look at the power and torque ratings. If it has 66kw / 90HP and 120lb/ft of torque or more it will be OK.

People who use more than this amount of power on todays roads generally hooligans and dangerous drivers. Its just not needed to get along briskly.

I had a 1.0 Ford Focus for a while as a company car and that had plenty of get and go.

Do note its the power and its use that gobbles fuel not the size of the engine. DOnt expect ecomomy wonders from any powerful car. Back in 1980 90HP from a 2.0 litre was not bad and those 2.0 cars were not slow.

I am not looking to speed past lots of traffic on A roads, certainly not 2 lorry’s so sorry if I wasn’t clear in my post. I don’t want a super fast car as I don’t have the need for one with the way I drive which is why I was going for the 1.0 in the first place. It’s more about being able to over take a tractor on a winding country roads and pulling out from a small road onto a busy road. With my current car, pulling out into a busy road means waiting for a huge gap in the traffic as otherwise a car that was far in the distance will be right up behind me before I get to 30 mph. I am not looking for a car to drive really fast in just one that can move quickly if needed. I was hoping for an owner of 1.0 firefly to let me know their experience of this engine

Hi and welcome :)
@Ralf S. commented here that you do get decent response from the turbo when you need it:
@Milo500X has also recently got one

But I'd agree a test drive might be best. It might need a bit of acclimatising, finding when the power from the turbo comes in, might feel slow below this.

This site states it has good low-down torque, 190Nm @ 1750rpm

I don't know what your current car is.. but the 500X has a turbocharger. If you're hovering behind a tractor in too high a gear, and you expect it to get up and go as soon as you poke the throttle then it'll feel like someone has just turned the ignition off instead.

If you keep it on boost, you only need to give it more gas and it'll go. The gearbox has 6 speeds, and it's a nice box, once you get used to the extra gear. You can drop it into the central plane (to find 3rd or 4th) rapidly. If you're crawling behind a tractor, then more likely you're "off boost" so first gear is a better bet than second.
