Battery? Alternator? what is wrong?

Finished work today, getting ready to set off to meet Ribbz, Wimmy, Azz, Start car, ignition lights come on then it all dies then like it's a life and death situtation, every thing comes back on and the car just manages to start, Leave park lights on for 2 mins car won't start, no power left, Lights dont dip when stereo is up of heater is on etc etc, runs fine once its been running.

1.6 16v 67k Battery 3 year old,

Well your battery is prolly furked now. If you have a voltmeter check how many volts are at the battery when the engine is running, it should be 13.8-14.0v. Less means your alternator is not happy.

I had a similar thing, parked up, came back and no lights at all. Battery had dried out and died.

I'll have a bash this weekend when i find my voltmeter, Cheers Tom, How hard would a new alternator be to fit? Am i right in thinking a few bolts and 2 wires?

No idea, its down the back of the 1.6 under the PAS pump if I remember. Its usually battery though, they last 3-5 years.

Same thing just happened to mine Sy. Nice new battery and no probs again. Remember, most batteries will give up the ghost after 3-5 years.

Cheers tom & Al think i'll go get a new battery today then, what do you lot recommend? I don't have any ice in yet so that wont be a problem and shouldnt be till april

I got a Heavy Duty Calcium Battery from Halfords (needed one quick and couldn't be arsed to shop around). £60 but came with a 4 year gaurantee. Starter motor doesn't know what's hit it!

Tom, did you find that the battery strap didn't fit when you put yours in? The clamp holds it no probs at all but I can fit my hand under the strap and can't see any way to adjust it.
