Hey there.

Came around again to ask a few things:
How's the new box connected to the existing console?
Can you just wire the new "speaker" to the woofer line-out in the stereo?

hi mate

i cant address the box question but i can tell you that you cant use the line out to power the sub unless you have a seperate amp

Its just running of one of the rear channels! To get it sounding right i had to play with the eq and ballance a bit on my head unit, but it sounds really good. I fitted a 2-way, 2KHz, 6db xover to the new speaker, connecting only the bass channel to use it as a 6bd low pass filter, keeping all the high stuff away from it. Hope that helps.

As Jay rightly says - you can't connect your sub pre-out directly to a passive speaker - the pre-out has to go to an amp which can then be connected to a speaker, or to an active sub. I was doing this job on the cheap and don't have a sub pre-out on my head unit so just used a spare rear channel as i only had two front speakers originally. Fortunately it worked out nice! If I had connected an amped sub I would then have to had to buy more powerful mids and tweeters to match all that bass. My head unit is a 4x45W kenwood and its plenty loud enough for me with it turned up to around 60% power. Beyond that the little speakers in the dash start distorting. Like I said at the start of this thread, this was meant to be an 'optimal bang for the buck' system...

hmm you have me thinking about the bass for few bucks theory and i forgot to mention one i put into practice in my golf a few years ago. Basically i had sod all money to spare but i like my bass so i was looking over my old surround system and i remembered i had an old mission ms-8 active sub in my cellar(y). so what i did was to spend 20 quid on a voltage convertor for my car,ran a house extention into the boot from under my seat and ran the sub out from my head unit to it!. The bass was pretty impressive for an 8 inch sub but i got a bit bored of it and proceeded to remove the amp from the sub cabinet and ran a 12" kenwood sub with it :D. I must point out however that if you want to try this out, you MUST check the power consumption of the active sub you intend to use and buy a convertor that puts out enough wattage for it otherwise the convertor will keep tripping itself out. for example my sub was a class d powered item so it only required 130w and the convertor i bought put out 150w so it was enough but if you buy an active sub, the cheaper ones out there (most eltax atomic series items) use class a/b amps so the consumption of power will be higher (the 12" one i had used about 230w IIRC).
