Anyone know if you can connect to the interior light wiring of a CAN BUS wired car without needing a special interface or causing problems to the system?

I only want to fit a basic alarm, something that sounds when one of the doors is opened, it's only got 3 wires, I'm sure the live & earth will not be a problem, it's just the one to the doors/light that I'm worried about.

Not possible. Those type of alarms are often -ve switched which means they need to be connected to door switch that earths to switch which I don't think CAN vehicles do (n)

Hmmm, thanks guys but I see we have a difference of opinion.

Indeed the alarm is -ve switched, thanks for the heads up on the location/colour of wires Ian, I'm guessing that you work for Toad, can you confirm that you have fitted such basic alarms to CAN BUS vehicles in the past without causing damage/problems?

Hi Mate

No i work for myself i Fit Toad alarms along with many others
I have fitted A101CL for a chap from this site
i have fitted an AI606 Cat one and an Alarm upgrade all standard non Can alarms
All have performed as they should
you will find that Can wires are very hardy and not easy to damage Can control
To be honest easier to fit standard alarm than Can on that car

Regards Ian

Hi all,

I'd like to thank Ian (Mr Toad Installer) for installing my car alarm today. Despite me sitting on the fence until it collapsed. Ian kindly didn't take the p*ss too much :D

No doubt Ian will comment on this.... :)

The whole job took around 3 hours and then I was on my merry way.

Job done.

Thanks, I'm not familar with the alarm models you quoted, I've used a basic one from Maplins for a few years now on the wifes cars, it's got an adjustable knock sensor and a choice of several different alarm tones, it came with two remotes too.

This is the first car we've had that's got CAN BUS......got to learn more about what you can and can't get away with when working on this system.

They are Profit alarms from Toad

www.mobilecaralarms.com

they are listed there
most Can cars can still be wired the old way but may take longer
than with can alarms
