£290.02 :D

Stu, Paul, you know how much i need a new PC :(
It is a good lappy, Pete, but not good enough for AA ;)

Next thing to buy for it is two pair of decent headphones - and a cigarette lighter adaptor - one in car DVD system for the kids, although still not sure how to mount it securely :)

Yeah it wouldn't play AA very well due to the GPU and RAM. Stu, look at a headphone splitter to share the headphones for a cheap solution. Make sure if you get some big ones you get closed design.

NB: stu, just realised, durr, that RAM wouldn't work in this as it is desktop RAM....! My laptop uses desktop RAM though.

See Paul, I would search but can't be bothered, you said in the past all Laptops used desktop RAM and they don't.

Link now says £579, even @ £400 the spec is pityful.

Liam

Was £289 :) Also you will find it hard to beat the spec for £400 for a brand new laptop.

I doubt I said that but if i did it was a mistake. My laptop uses DIMM but most laptops use SODIMM (hope I have that right) SODIMM is something like 192pin but small than 180pin DIMM. No idea why mine uses DIMM, it is a desktop replacement but it uses a P4-M (i.e. mobile P4) CPU, mobile 5600go 128mb graphics etc. Makes upgrading much cheaper though :D

my laptops got 4mb gfx ;) and the touchpad is so worn im down to the metal in some places, and the mouse occasionally has a mind of its own lol :p i need to start saving for new comp (oh and the laptops batt dont work lol)

Have you ever used a good one?

I will never have anything else. I mean about a year ago I bought a 3.06Ghz P4-M, 15.1" TFT 1400x1050 (SVGA+ great screen), 512mb RAM, DVD+ or - RW, 4 USB, firewire, wireless, Gforce 5600go 128mb GPU etc. etc. for £999. True it was worth £1500 and you could probably have got similar much more easily in desktop form for the same money (I had to queue at Aldi) BUT for me it's perfect. Why? I often have to go home for the weekend/holidays. It takes up no room, can be carried on the train etc. On both end I have a fully pledged gaming system/WP/websurfer/programming computer that I don't even have to get out of bed to use.

I think that's the best/worse thing for me, I sit in bed and use it for hours. Like now, like in the morning I will wake at 9 and be working at 9:02 doing VB or similar lol.

I put it down the side of my bed now when I go to bed and you wouldn't even know there's a computer in here, no desktop space used etc. I can take it downstairs and surf the web in the conservatory for 90 mins (even on a year old battery).

Etc. etc. lol

Quick scan of the web shows a 512Mb stick of notebook RAM to be £55 and desktop stick to be £30, depends on the notebook I suppose then.

Can never have enough RAM, I use 1Gb in my Desktop.

Liam

I will go up to one gig when an additional 512mb stick (they even used on stick instead of two 256s, how kind!) drops below £20 which I predict to be in 3-4 months.

Cheers for that advice about headphones - only thing now is to find something to hold it steady in the car - the middle row passenger seats have aircraft style tables, so may be able to work on that. Need to do a bit of hunting about.

I would have checked the spec of RAM today before ordering anyway.

@ Liam - for £289, it was a bargain, even at that spec. Once a wifi connection in place, then becomes very useful for surfing round the house, especially now our 4 y/o is into computers and Jules finds she can't use the desktop, lol.

just been watching American Chopper, the dell one dropped from £399, to £349 in the space of 2 ad-breaks! Not sure if its the same one, but looked very similar.

You mean the inspiron 1000?

If so, it has a 2.2 ghz processor (old celeron, not D), the sempron 2600+ runs 25% quicker than the 2.8ghz old celeron, let alone the 2.2ghz! 40%?!

Comes with only a 14.1" screen for that price.

30gb not 40gb hdd

DVD-ROM not even a CD-RW...! Ours has a dual layer DVD-RW

Not one part of the system is comparable except 256mb DDR!

Plus we paid £289 ;)

At which point you will feel annoyed paying £x for a year old laptop.....;)

Oh but it means it's about 2% off due to inflation!

Dell are doing a Lappy for £399, spec seems a shade higher.

Liam
And for £110 more than what I paid! You got a link?

TBH, I was not in the market for a laptop, having used one at work since 2000 [I have just bought myself a new workstation, etc.]. I wouldn't have gone in PCW and spent £580 on this one, or any model.

BUT for £290 you can't knock it :)
