I wouldn't say I have had any problems with mine. Only things I have replaced is because of wear and tear, brakes, tyres etc etc
ive had two front wheel bearings on the front. Everything else ive replaced is because ive wanted to. When o first got the car it was in the garage for a month because where I bought it from where part fitters not mechanics and they wouldn't believe me that it had a noisy water pump. Apart from.that, touch wood its been and will remain a very reliable car.

Imo problems start when you lack in quality services and you start messing with things. Replace parts with cheap or used parts and you bound to spend allot.

After 18 months of one issue after another, my daughter got rid.

Doing a DVLA vehicle check, i see that it's been taxed recently, so someone is either going to get a car which is now sorted, or inherit a number of problems that we didn't yet experience.

30 years ago, Fiats were rightly regarded as rubbish.
They were unreliable rot boxes.
Although to be fair, most cars of that era were rot boxes.

Our GP did not instill any faith in me that Fiat are any more reliable today, than they were 30 years ago, so for that reason, it's highly unlikely that i'll ever have another.

Besides, I'll probably be dead by then anyway.

I like how people blame it on servicing when they know nothing about you.

Personally I had full service history when i bought it and i continued every 5000miles sometimes being twice in a year oil and filters at least

I just had a dud like other people commenting on here, but as said above lost all faith

Thanks Sweex

Nothing on my car was skimped on. Parts that failed shouldn't of on the age of car, and as said because of poor design.

I had a turbo and the lights update,
Turbo was after remap, can't win them all . .

Mine was 2007 also... Maybe ours rolled off the production line together!!!

The 2006 and 2007 models seem the most troublesome.

Mine was very trouble free at 57 reg?
Maybe yours were made before fiat summer shut down? Their minds would be on partying and Hollidays :D

Mines a July 2007 registration (first batch of t-jets), so must have been built June ish; it's been great.

Tjets seem fine its these 1.9mjets which they stopped making they knew they were crap

The ones vauxhaul Nissan alfa and others still use?
Vag is pants, my 09 reg van was non turbo PD engine from the 90's not even common rail now that's a bad engine :(
Fiat stopped them cos they think everyone wants little road tax cars :(
I want a big petrol engine but no one makes them, it'll have to be older alfa or RS4 for me next :(

Nissan? They use Renault engines .. The 1.9 150 m-jet/cdti is not known for reliability

The engine on mine was fine, very noisy though.

In all fairness, for any guests viewing this thread this feedback about the Grande Punto shouldn't put you off getting one - modern Fiats are pretty good (especially considering their PRICE in comparison to the all-high, all-mighty German-made cars, the ones that aren't even that reliable; everyone seems to overlook that) and a problem-child Fiat is about as rare as a non-problematic Rover. Of course people who are disappointed with their car are going to congregate to mock them - I'm sure the far majority of GP owners here will be perfectly happy with their cars.

Good points:
- The petrol engines are pretty bulletproof, especially non-turbo models.
- Fun (and very easy) to drive.
- SAFE, a very important point.
- Pretty nippy, yet frugal.
- Fantastic to look at and be in.
- CHEAP - to buy, insure and run.
- Comfortable and spacious, with a good interior and a large boot.
- Easy to find used.
- Well-made, fairly quiet.
- Well-equipped.
- Good range of engines and trim.
- Spares are readily avaliable if it does come to that. It's the Fiat dealers that take a lend when it comes to fobbing you off (sometimes). Even then, its an easy car to maintain and service yourself.

I could name a few more, but it's half one in the morning and I can't be arsed. But at the end of the day, the Grande Punto is a fantastic car, perfect for a learner or small family, and the leader of its class in my opinion. It's the more interesting choice, for those who don't want to stick to the staus quo; the moral of the story is, just don't buy a lemon.

As for my advice, buy a 2009 or later petrol-engined car, with at least a dynamic-level trim, 1.4 16V or above. Make sure it's been well looked after, and that the mileage isn't ridiculous. I don't really see the point of buying one new, considering how fast they depreciate given the current climate. If you're looking for a diesel, get the newer 1.6, and make sure the gearbox isn't knacked.

I once had a house plant that I wasn't particularly happy with - I spent a lot of money on the damn thing too. I should have bought a Japanese Peace Lily, would've been so much better-made and more reliable too :p

I agree with much of your post however the turbo petrols, T-jet and later Multiair are at least as reliable as any of the others.

From 2009 onwards the 1.4 16v was only available in GP trim and the T-jet was only in Sporting.

They didn't stop making them due to being crap, in fact it's an engine that as a whole is very solid and reliable, they stopped making it due to emissions etc and euro 5 regs.

Tbh what 'engine' specific issues have 1.9 owners had? I haven't seen many on OEM models, and normally seems to be gearbox issues from what I've seen.
