I have a 1978 spider 1800. There is an automatic choke. Dies the fan and sensor in the radiator need to be connected in order for it to start?

Not to my knowledge, generally when engine cold the most you would need to do is press accelerator pedal once to allow choke flap to close as some foul the throttle link on carb stopping fast idle action.
Easy to take air cleaner off and see if choke flap is closed or not.
However I would address your previous post first.
